This is the second tank from Petco that has started leaking.

I bought a 10 and a 29 "deluxe" kit from Petco to use as QT's. The 29 started leaking after my fish were in for only 9 days in hypo. I had to transfer them to the 10 while I re-siliconed the 29 and have been back in the 29 and no leaks since on the 29.

Now the 10 is leaking and just sent a friend to Wal Mart to pick up a 10 to replace it. I rescued a "Powder Brown", actually A. Japonicus White Face Tang that had ich and have had him in Hypo for 6 days and is doing very well but now the 10 is leaking much quicker than the 29 did so I put everything in one of my 32g rubbermaid cans till the new tank arrives.

This has to be more than just bad luck. To buy 2 tanks at the same time and both started leaking within less than 10 days of use on both!

I know I could go back and get my money back or an exchange of another tank that will probably leak also but I am just needing to vent, I guess. Since the glass is fine and all I have to do is reseal, it's not that big of a deal other than the hassle of having to deal with this at 10:30 at night.

I will definitely go to the Petco tomorrow have have a bit of a discussion with the manager.

hmmm I have a 20 gallon long for my QT tank from the same place and have had it for 5 years. It has been a FW tank and was converted to my first sw tank.. I've never had it leak at all.. Have you taken the leaking tanks back to them for replacement? Or even called the store?

Yeah and my 75g has been moved 3 times and re leveled each time and still doesn't leak after 4 years.

The 29 was placed on a solid oak dresser and was level front to back and left to right and also even diagonally. Each corner touched perfectly even. After filled with water, still level.

I placed the 10 on a counter in the kitchen and here again was level and even in every direction including diagonal.

I don't even care about getting the tanks replaced because all I would get is another sub-par sealed tank. I have re-sealed the 29 and will do the same to the 10. As an example, the stand or surface would have to be extremely out of wack, for a tiny tank like a 10g to be stressed to the point of leakage so this point is moot considering the surfaces for both were sturdy and full bubble.

Well in defense of them.. (Which I seldom do let me tell ya), they are just the sellers of the hardware not the manufacturer. What brand of tank so I don't buy one as I have been thinking of purchasing a new tank.

What I am talking about here are warranties that basically mean nothing. Sure Petco would replace the tanks but that's not the point. What if the leak had been worse and what if it was a full nano reef with hundreds and hundreds worth of coral and all were lost. Would they replace that as well, NO! The tang it was QT'ing is worth at least 3 times what the bare 10g is worth.......would they have compensated for the tang if it had been lost?

Should someone have to seal a tank properly before they ever use it because of shoddy craftsmanship?

Here's another example of crappy craftsmanship and worthless warranty. The first Porsche I bought was a 1987 928S back in 1993. It had 67k miles and had a broken timing belt. Anyone that knows this engine, knows what the repairs entail. 31 out of 32 valves were bent so all 32 were replaced with new TRW valves were purchased.

The valves alone cost $2300 and then you factor in machine work on the heads and gasket sets, etc, ect...you are close to 5g. The exhaust valves are sodium filled to aid in heat transfer from the head to the stem. The stems are hollowed out, filled with sodium and fused back together.

Long story short, one of the exhaust valves seperated and dropped into the cylinder, totally destroying the head, cylinder and piston. The two pieces of the broken valve were sent to TRW and , after being inspected, TRW admitted their valve had failed. I was so relieved hearing this and was ready for them to pay for all the damage done by their defective valve but this was not in the cards. They were willing to replace the valve but not the entire engine that was destroyed. After consulting an attorney and weighing the costs of litigation, I just had to eat the losses.

You see what I mean?

Exactly correct. Like I said, I don't even care about the cost of the tank or getting a replacement. My point has to do with the big picture. I guess I am just shouting at the moon here, as it were. I am not blaming Petco one bit. My complaint is in general about shoddy workmanship and the meaningless manufacturer warranty behind it.

But the warranty is from the manufacturer not the retailer correct? If the retailer takes it back it is merely as a service to you and they file the warranty paperwork on your behalf.
