your fav fw puffer

An Mbu needs way more than 40 gallons. They get to about 2 feet or more - pufferlist.com recommends 1000gal min. In a 30gal the largest you want to go is about 4-6".

hmm it may do but from every place ive been and seen them and spoke to specialist they all say that a RIO 180 tank, 46 gallon is fine for a Mbu for about 3 years...

The Mbu puffer can reach almost two feet long, 40 gallons isnt big enough for its bathroom, LOL. Just kidding. There is a big, big big article about them in Nov 2006 issue of TFH. Losts of info on it.

If you have one in a 40 gallon and feel that you are right to keep it in there for a long long time, please do your fish a favor and look further into it. I dont know why any specialist would ever say such a thing about keeping it in a small tank for ever. Think about it this way, a saltwater porcupine puffer needs 100 gallons and can only get to 1/2 the size of the Mbu

I read that article and thats not good at all but good that it has been pointed out.

They told me it will be fine for a few years then need a bigger tank, but i didnt want to risk the fact of paying lots of money for it and it out growing the tank quicly. Which from that article sounds like a very quick thing to happen.

But still it is my fav puffer :)

thats all just great guys but can you post if you are responding to me please. what do you think of arrowhead puffers.

I have a Palembang/humpback puffer with I have in a 30 gallon tank. He is very aggressive towards other fish. I do have 1 full grown bristle nose pleco that he doesn't bother. He is about 4.5" long now, and the articles that I have read say they get to be about 8", but I have never seen on get that big. They live to be over 10 years old. They don't move around that much durring the day. THey are a "lurker" fish, so he just moves around durring feeding time, and at night when he is out on the prowle for food. I feed him every other day, and feed him shrimp. About once a month I will feed him live fish, but after quaranteen for about a week. The one time I didn't quaranteen he got a fungus on his body.

The Arrowhead puffer was going to be my first puffer I was going to get, the only problem was I couldn't get one from the LFS. They are about the same as the Palembang/humpback. The only big difference is that the arrowhead will need about 4-5" of substraight for them to burrow in. The arrowhead is a lurker fish too, so he will not be real active. They look really cool burrowed in the sand and snap up when a fish swims in front of it.

If I was to do it all over again, and could get either of these fish I would deffenitly go with the arrowhead. Although both are a great choice. Just remember if you are looking for a fish that will be moving around a lot and can get tankmates for, then you are looking at the wrong fish. Most if not all fresh water puffers should be kept alone, or with same spieces of fish, and even some can't tolerate that. Good luck and let me know what you decide on.
