When I was 13, I had an Oscar that would actually let me pet it. I am not kidding!! It would come to the top of the tank and just float there while I rubbed the top of its head. It was pretty cool!!! Now I have 2 German rams that are pretty curious. They always come to see me when I'm near the tank.

That's how the Jack Dempsey I had in high school was. He would let me stroke his head when I was at the tank. He was also well aware of feeding time because I had him trained to come for food when I lightly tapped twice on the rim. If I tapped three times he would immediately flee to the other side, because he knew that meant it was tank-cleaning time, and he hated that. He was also big in enforcing his own idea of "home decor." I would fix up his tank and spread the gravel this way or that, plastic plants and all, and the bigger rocks just so.... and within a day he would have all the gravel piled to the edges of the tank, with a deep hole to the center, all the plants floating freely, and even the heaviest of rocks (10 lbs) would be moved from one side to the other! And this was no small tank - it was 50 gallons or so!

He also knew when it was me coming to feed or do what ever. Anyone else he wouldn't even react to.

My Oscar would let me pet him, too. He'd come to the surface and would roll over onto his side and let me rub him with my fingers. I hand fed him all the time as well. That's what I love about Oscars.

My zebra loaches are quite personable -- the first one I got comes right up to the glass to look at me whenever I am near the tank, very cute :o

My betta is also very social, always watches me and swims along the tank when I walk by. He waits in his corner every morning to be fed (so he doesn't have to compete with the other fish for food).

Angels have always been VERY personable with me.

I've owned two very personable fish. Well three but tied for first and second place would be my Oscar and my Pacu. I had a Pacu which was incredible. Huge amounts of personality. Had to give him back to the LFS and then I found out through someone at the store that they put him in a plastic bag and threw him in a dumpster the day I brought it in :( I asked them if they'd take care of him and they said yes... Obviously their thought of the word 'care' was different. Poor critter. My oscar was a great fish too. Had him for about 8 years.

My last one that I'd say has personality is my Angelfish. He's great too but not like the oscar or pacu.
That's sad about your Pacu :(

Lol that Jack Dempsey sounds hilarious. =P Oh my goodness, and you trained him? Now you've got me interested! ;)

Actually come to think of it, I had a large clown loach once (about 6") that would grab food out of my hand but other than that, he didnt seem to pay too much attention to me or anyone else.

If I had a 5000 gallon fish tank, I'd get me another Pacu :) Not the black one but the red... my poor pacu was about 15" long when I had to give him away to the LFS. He was just way too big for my 100 gallon.
