That's true, but the supply company that I went to said that they also carry Estes brand which is its 'replacement' (idk about how exact of a replacement it is, but everything i've read says its good), for the same price.

yes i knew there was a rebrand but i wasnt sure of the name there you go. there are also other quartz products out there.
black ecocomplete, and floramax (not completely black, some red in there) are both great plant substrates IME and the plant colors contrast really well.
I really hate that rough powder-coated black gravel as well, but couldn't find anything else. I ended up putting a second coat on myself. It was a pain but made it much smoother with less disintegration in the tank.
+1 for black Eco-Complete Plant Substrate. Very nice mix of particle size and dark colors. Looks great and my plants seem to like it.
