I've been talking about getting a 50 gallon well today I went too petsmart and they had a 55 for $160 it came with hoods lights a heater and fillter(among a few other things) is that a good buy? I have a question, can I start the cycle without having gravel in the tank or any decor plants ect?

It's an all glass aquarium(brand name) 55 long I dont know the measurements, the hood lamps i'm not sure about they each have one 15 w flourescent light(the box says 24" aquarium reflector???),the filter is a top fin pro filter 60.

well i dont know if its just me but I prefer to stay away from kits and just buy the tank by itself.

The topfin filters are just ok but if your gonna go 55 gallon you might as well get a Good filter. Plus the kits you get are fine for a while until you realize, "hey I can do better than that" and then you go out and buy a better light, filter, etc...

if you need help deciding on what combination to get many ppl here would be happy to suggest equipment catered to what kinda of tank/fish you want to have

add it all up on its own, with the products would you pick. see if its worth it.

My parents bought me a 20 gallon All-Glass kit.

I still have the gravel, filter, hood, light but the heater broke after awhile.

This was in 1994. It is 2004.

So I wouldn't shy away from all kits.

Just check it out.

Assuming good filter media, and heat helps a lot, you can start a cycle, and get things rolling. all you need is a good surface for the bacteria to colonise, and your filter media typically does the trick. You would definately want to get the substrate in as soon as you can , unless you have a filter with some type of permanent bio-media like a bio wheel or ceramic noodles etc. Otherwise you will have to be very careful with media cleaning to prevent problems.

I wasent going too buy a kit but I started too think about picking everything out and I dident want too go through the hassle. BTW it's not a pro 60 it's a power 60.:o

That filter is not enough power for that tank, i bought the same thing you were or are gonna buy except it was a 20g set. I assume its big box with a bunch of accesories like food, heater, and a video and other stuff. For the first few weeks the water was cloudy, there was crap on the surface and it looked bad, your gonna need to buy another filter for your tank. My 20g set was $80, so that looks like a good buy, except for the new filter.

It says on the box it's good enough for a 60 gallon the one I got is a 55. Maybe the one you got was a lemon,or there just all pieces of crap:mad: i'll find out soon enough.
