Your thoughts on the causes of Multiple Tank Syndrome (MTS)

So it looks like we've established the following...

The desire to keep multiple aquariums stems from 5 things (in no particular order)

1. The desire to keep multiple species, which are not compatible.
2. An extension of the basic hobby - breeding, growout, QT tanks.
3. Aesthetics (wanting every room in the house to have an aquarium, etc.)
4. For therapeutic reasons - as a creative outlet, for relaxation purposes.
5. Rescue, rehab of fish that have been neglected or abused.

What am I missing? :)

Anyone have any other reasons that do not fall into these five caterogies?
That looks as though it covers what has been mentioned thus far.

It is this website. Seriously.

This site brings us to view and hear about hundreds of other peoples tanks. We then want more and more. Before I was a member here all I ever had and wanted was one tank....after about 3 months here that all changed very drastically.

LOL 100% :iagree:

mts is like any other addiction when you get into it you have a tendency to push it as far as you can.

Two and a half months ago my children mentioned in passing that they thought it would be neat to have an aquarium. They didn't even pester me about it. In fact, they probably would have forgotten it and maybe never brought it up again. However I do not need much encouragement when it comes to picking up new interests.

I bought a few books on the subject and joined this forum to ask a bunch of questions. Then I bought a 36 gallon bow front aquarium from Craigslist and had a blast setting it up and stocking as a nice community tank. That was way more than the kids had expected (they would have been happy with a ten gallon and a goldfish).

I could have easily stopped there. But no......

Last week I bought a 50 gallon through craigslist and the guy threw in a 10 gallon for free. So now I have three tanks and I have only been in this hobby for 2 1/2 months.

I plan to set up the 50 gallon as an Mbuna tank and the ten gallon will probably get some Tetra, Kuhli Loaches, and a Fancy Guppy

Not an addiction...compulsion, maybe ;)

I don't think anyone would rob a convenience store or sell their body for more fish tanks!

At least...I don't think so...:perv:

I don't know, is it considered a disorder when it doesn't hinder your everyday life? The only compulsive part about it is that I notice I seldom, if ever, feel satisfied with the way things are.

I always have at least one aquarium in the house, waiting to be set up. Once I get it set up, I usually either want to tear one down, add another one, or replace one I already have. Often times in part because I am so pleased with the new arrangement, that the other ones look less attractive...

Usually one in particular will start making me unhappy, and then I will focus on that one (looks a little dirty, overgrown, don't like the selection of fish in it, etc.) until I change it and get it back up to par. Then the cycle repeats! :screwy:

As defined by the APA a disorder is "a group of symptoms involving abnormal behaviors, persistent or intense distress, or a disruption of physiological functioning" So yes in fact your entire last post smacks of a disorder :)
