Hi all i have aquestion about danios,my tank is about a year old now it is a community tank that was originally started with 3or4danios.Presently it has 4 angels(med)4 swordtails,2 catfish of some kind i never see,and 1or2 of something simalar to swordtails and 1 very ill danio,he is extremly bloated huge and looks as though his backbone is distorted a couple months ago i lost one much the sme way noone else seems out of ordinary any thoughts could it be something missing in environment, diet,or were they harmed during tank cycle.I have just read the article on euthanization, doesnt seem that i will have any choice.

ps sorry not much of a writer

IMO, those are bad signs for the fish. Are these a fancy variety of danio (long finned, or leopeards, blues, etc)? IME, the fancy varieties more often show up with deformities and other problems, unrelated to exposure to ammonia or nitrites--I think it's because these are line bred fish with a higher percentage of nasty recessives. That's just a guess though.

If the fish isn't showing any other symptoms, I don't think this is anything contagious, so it won't impact your other fish (though the other danios may develop something similar down the line).

I had a White Cloud with similiar symptoms. It was his diet. He was HUGE like a ballon. Almost looked like he was going to explode and his spine looked like an 'S' because he was sooooo fat. He was getting high protein food with little Spriluna (sp). I switched foods to a Spirlina flake 3 or 4 times a week and he is doing great. He looks normal now with bright red colors. My guess is he ate so much protein and he was getting internal blockage (maybe). The spriluna I think helps him "clear" out.

I also have 3 Zebra Danios in this tank - my Firebelly Toad tank. All are doing great now with the diet change.

Just could be a possibility. Try feeding a food heavy in Spriluna algae a few times a week.

Good Luck

Aries.

update zebra danio

Thanks for the replies ,it was just a plain jane zebra but it was the third of a trio purchased together other to died of simalar circumstances. So as he looked really bad bloated stomach which dwarfed his head and seemed to make him s shape sitting on stumps which unusual for him so i put him to sleep(notfun)I kind of wish i would have waited for your replie in regard to diet.
I did test tank for nitrites and amm. both zero.
Thanks again
Ron

Funny Danios

I have a couple of danios that have on odd bend in them also...they always have, I think they are just a little inbred or slightly deformed, but they are happy and see healthy :o
