I have one lonely danio in my 46 gallon turtle tank. I introduced friends for it on many occasions, unfortunately they all dissapeared within a few days, all during the night. I am actually suspecting my huge comet goldfish of eating them, as my turtles didnt notice them and they aren't active during the night.
I turned on the room lights today while it was dark and saw the danio in place (rare) and not moving much. It seemed to sort of shimmer and I thought the temperature had fallen too low (71 degrees). Do they do this at night to rest or sleep? If so, they coulda def. been eaten then.
SO, now I want to move it into my 10 gallon tank filtered by a penguin bio-wheel 150 (powerful filter!). I'll probably get it as many friends as my tank can hold, (if any??) I currently have a few fancy guppies and two corydoras in there. How many? Suggestions?

Danios don't add too much to a bioload. If you keep up with water changes, you could probably get away with adding 3 or 4 more in addition to the one you have into the 10 gallon. I wouldn't keep less than 3 - my school was reduced to 2 fish after old age took the rest of the group, and the remaining 2 fish started to waste away. I got them 5 friends and they perked right up again. You'll want to watch them with the guppies though, they can be fin nippers - especially during feeding time.

As for your disappearing danios, they will jump out of an uncovered tank and they also have an uncanny way of wedging themselves into places and getting stuck and suffocating (i.e. between rocks and the tank wall, heater and tank wall, etc). It took me some trial and error to "danio-proof" my tank.

I heard they jump, never anything about wedging though. Thanks for the tip I'll be on the lookout. I do have a cover over my tank, but its not very tight like a glass canopy is.

I wouldn't say you need a full glass-canopy. A regular hood will work (atleast it has in my case).

You could definatly add 4-5 more to the 10gallon without a problem.

My danios use to go into the filter and play around. I was lucky they didnt take a leap of faith. Would hear them splashing in it every night. I have a 10 with 7 zeb. danios, 2mollies,and a swordtail. Just added 2 temp. loaches till new tank is cycled. Other than the loaches these tank mates have been together for over 7months I d say and are just fine. Just make sure to keep up with the water/grav. vac cause 10gal. tanks seem to get messy pretty fast in my opinion.
