I added some zooplankton (daphnia & copepods mainly) to my 10 gallon aquarium over the fall after the fish were removed.

Well they didn't last long.

The biggest group lasted just a few days. I guess there wasn't enough detritus for them.

I was hoping they'd survive and multiply as a source of fish food.

All were wild caught out of lakes.

Try adding a good layer of leaf litter to the 10 gal next time. The bacteria decomposers and protozoan that feed on them are suitable replacements for free floating algae. You won’t get the same yield as using GW but you’ll have a steady and reliable daphnia or copepod population.

On a side note; when mixing daphnia and copepods in small containers such as aquariums; you usually end up with just copepods.
