During my search of a canopy design i came across bevicking's (http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/member.php?u=192) photo album which included his great canopy/stand making skills and then theres the slate wall.
http://img214.imageshack.us/img214/9327/86992564jk6.jpg
I loved the look and decided to make my own.
Supplies:
Slate - I went with slate tiles 12x12 alot cheaper than the petstore slate. $1.97 per tile.
Styrofoam - I went with Pink styrofoam since i had tons of that
Glue - Aquarium safe silicone
Tools - hammer and a chisel to break up the tile and break off any sharp edges. Hacksaw to cut the styrofoam. Sand paper to smooth the styrofoam to perfect shape.
And the results are...

the pink will be buried by the gravel in the foreground and behind the wall will be a higher level of gravel. (credit goes to bevicking once again:headbang2:)

looks great... where are you getting such uniform slate chuncks? all the aquarium stores seem to have such random, flaky crap.
I made my slate walls with near shards in some places, and broke sheets apart...
makes me realize, I really want to be able to cut and grind stone in my living room.

Used 12x12 slate tile which i got from home depot.
Tried to score them to get as uniform of a break as possible but wasnt fully successful it just went its own way, so i tried to make the best of it. Thats only 1 tile.
For now the silicone is curing and that will take a few days.. meanwhile i will be finishing off the canopy/lighting and redoing the whole tank..
Have one more tile left. Might make another wall who knows..
Got pix of your wall mellow??

I did all the work outside, brought it inside to finish it off due to the crazy rain/snow.

no, I meant, I'd like to be able to cut and grind stone in MY living room...
my kitchen is already more of a workshop than a kitchen. I need a garage. or something.
my slate wall isn't really the same function, it contains the gravel in my island, in the 15g tank in my sig. the island hangs on plexi strips suctioned to the walls of the tank. the island itself is a plexi sheet, cut into a corner shape, with a hole in the middle. the hole has a window screen cone glued in, and then stone is stacked around the edge, to build it up... then the cone and shelf are filled with eco-complete. the end product is a removable shelf that is fully planted, with roots in submerged soil. the roots even find their way out into the water column via holes in the wall and the window screen cone.
it works... I'd like to improve the design now that I have seen one in action. it's easy to remove the shelf, but hard to put it back in securely, and I damaged it early on, when the design was a little more complicated, so it flexes a bit. I also would like a wider screen cone.
ahhh yes i remember looking through your pictures. really a nice setup
I remember when i first seen the pictures im like "is this guy building a bird nest or what??" lol
also love the hc in your 10g

thanks. the HC has really outgrown the 10... and is slowly just taking the whole thing over. I think I might have to start that tank over again... but no time soon.

Looks awesome bk828! Very nice job!!! I know I said it before, but it pays to leave the top pieces free (not glued down). That way they can be removed to tie plants to if you choose to do so.
Man mellow, if you cut and grind stone in your house, anywhere, you'd be better off sleeping outside! That's a LOT of dust  I didn't grind any but I cut my slate. A LOT of dust!!!
-beviking :D
Yup i didnt glue the top as instructed.
But one error i did make is use the pink styrofoam.. its too dense and isnt very stable due to the thickness of it and the weight of the stones not being heavy enough.. what i will need to do is cut out a hole on the bottom of the styro to glue a few stones in place to help keep it down.
Bk718
01-14-2008, 10:53 PM
Update..
I scooped out the bottom of the styrofoam and will glue a few stones to the bottom to prevent it from floating up..
I also decided to make another wall to give the tank some balance as well.. (the stones are already made and are drying off from the boil)
Heres a picture of the tank layout i made, the white is the tanks area..
http://img443.imageshack.us/img443/6569/1021393zy7.jpg
Both walls will come together to either a coconut shell cave or another cave i can make out of the slate.. will see what works

Looks like way too much work too me.
My parents live in the middle of nowhere in Nevada and they have tons of slate around them. They just used it to rebuild there fireplace and had some sitting in their garage. So when they invited themselves to my place for Christmas, I made them bring me 50lbs of slate. I broke it up and stacked it in my 125. My koi (that have a home in a pond in the spring) have been rearranging it to their desires. Kind of looks like a natural rock-pile now. I'm thinking of renting the koi out as decorators.

no the styrofoam will be under .5-1" of gravel and it will not melt/release toxins since people use styrofoam in diy backgrounds without problems

Looking good bk828. The artsy fartsy types will tell you not to make it too symetrical and something about a "golden rule" 3:2 or some ratio of "the perfect center" which is actually off center :wall: I think the idea is if you make a point to point out the actual center, you bring to light the fact that your aquascape is actually in a tank and you shouldn't do that for a more natural presentation. It's your tank, do what you want! I never was artistically inclined :( or :)
mellowvision
01-15-2008, 2:55 PM
that's funny, I was tempted to say something about not making it so symetrical, but stepped back, to see where you went with it. I do prefer asymetrical landscapes myself.
well i guess its 2 late.. i already glued the other wall... lol
When i was making the 2nd wall i was thinking of making it shorter but then realized it wouldnt really fit if i wanted to make a cave type of thing in the center.. I can always move one of the walls to a different angle..

I think it looks awesome. I keep getting closer to doing something in this realm of the DIY world and your piece has put me one step closer.
I may have missed it but I do have a question... why the styrofoam? I'm guessing to protect the tank bottom or to use less slate...
yeah, or rotate it 180 and form an S... or raise it up higher than the other... a million things you can do.
the 2nd wall is already a bit lower than the other. I accidentally cut the styrofoam 1/4" smaller and the 2nd tile was somewhat bad quality.. it was 2 crummy, every time i tried to shape it to size it would just crumble every which way. the rotating 180 wouldnt be possible since when gluing i wasnt really focusing on how the back looks.. just the look of the presentable front side.

bevicking suggested styrofoam to prevent any damage being done to the bottom glass.. but im sure the other is to add that extra height to it, atleast thats the deal in my case.

know what I'd do with these two symetrical pieces? I'd run them diagonally from the front right to back left (or opposite) corners, and slope the gravel under them. that alone will keep it from looking too uniform... and I'd make the walkway snake around, not straight.

Bk718
01-16-2008, 12:06 AM
i will need to come up with a way to increase the height in back of the wall since i dont want to be using up that much gravel.. and the hill wont really be noticeable since the tank will be planted (and will be a pain in the ____ to have it stay as a hill)
mellowvision
01-16-2008, 12:08 AM
pink foam, just grade it back, maybe glue some gravel on it for grip, and then pour your substrate for the whole area from the point you want the hut. it will pile naturally around the area and build your hill.

the pink foam is a bad choice since it just wants to float back up. In the wall i had to glue some tile pieces to the bottom to give it more balance and make it more sturdy. I will have to see how regular white foam goes.. if it holds with 2" of gravel above it then its good.
I was thinking of just having the gravel flat where the hut is (or maybe on a slight slant) the only hill would be is where the walkway is.
The more inches i add to the ground the more gallons i take away from the tank..

it's worth it in the end, more boring fish is not better than less, interesting fish. any foam is going to float, just silicone a piece of slate to it.

Looking good (sounds like nice stocking too). I'm not sure if weight is much of a concern but bricks may work as filler for areas where you don't want to use tons of gravel. There have got to be more big things that sink... bricks came to mind first.

:wall: lol why didnt i think of that?! i was thinking white styrofoam with a big piece of slate glued on top to hold it down.. and covered in 2-3" of gravel..
hmm now im thinking more and i think a brick will add 2 much height but will see.
JohnEX
01-16-2008, 10:17 AM
why not just get another tile to make up the height difference? it's only 2 bucks... and the extra weight is likely not going to be an issue... that foam will really stand out if any gravel happens to get moved and exposes it...
Bk718
01-16-2008, 10:28 AM
okay i just measured if i decide to use 2" of gravel behind the wall i will need 1-1.5" of blank material. The tile is 1/2" thick so would need 2-3 more tiles to make up that blank space behind the entire 2 walls and shaping the tile for the wall would be a pain in the you know what.. so i would just rather use the 1" styro with a heavy enough piece of slate on top to hold it down. And since its 2" of gravel the styrofoam has no chance of being exposed.

Ok, you've inspiried me bk, I'm off to lowes today to get some slate. I'm also going to try to make a pleco cave. Though the last time I was there, they only had slate floor tiles, which had me thinking how lovely they would look in my bathroom, they would actually make a decent cave for the pleco. Doesn't have to be pretty, as I'll bury it most of the way. Anyway... come on over to my ouse and make me a hood for my corner tank, ok? :)

Did you make that coconut cave yourself, or is it pre-made, like those I've seen at Petco in the reptile area?
I'm going to have to try one of those rock walls myself. I've always wanted a terraced effect.
Made the coconut cave myself (have 2 actually) initial purpose was to make it a moss covered coconut but didnt really work out since i didnt give it enough time to anchor on. Petco coconut caves are a rip off.

:headbang2: Not bad at all :D
The foam is to alleviate some weight and pressure points and prevents scratches too. It isn't absolutely necessary with smaller projects. HD and Lowes sell white sheets of styro that is 3/4" thick that would probably work better for many people.
It's not too late for that mossy coconut...the one in the tank, not on your shoulders :). You can buy brown hair nets (usually 3 for $1 at pharmacy). Pull the cave out, sprinkle it with moss, stretch the hairnet over it and tie it off underneath. Cut a small hole where the door is (it'll stretch so start small) and you're set. Put it back in and in a few weeks it'll be grown in.
tennesseemom, I have in my sig of pics my diy corner tank hood if you're interested. One thing I would change is a single hinge at the front instead of two.

About the styrofoam.. USE WHITE ONLY lol the pink is a crazy floater and will require plenty of rocks to hold it down and balanced.

omg, now that I've seen your corner tank, I feel the urge to redo my tank! Your's is beautiful! What are the little wisps of grass type in the front? Where did you place your spraybar and intake?
I made a cave, it's not very pretty, and I'm sure you talented guys could make it prettier, but my pleco fits and most importantly he loves it. I used 3 pieces of slate tile, broke one in half and used those for the sides. I should have put gravel in the silicone on the top when it was wet. Too late now. I also siliconed a piece of driftwood to the top, not sure if that will hold. It's open ended for water flow and so pleco can fit. There's also a depression in the gravel under it, once again so pleco can fit.
Ignore the glare, dirty glass and mini-cycle:) Did you guys go through a mini-cycle when you added the slate?

Why the h377 is that in the photo section???? It's a tanks specs list...there are no photos :wall:
Thanks tennesseemom. The wispy plants are hair grass (eleocharis parvula). My intake is in the back corner and I have two outputs on either side, at the top at 45degree angles downward. No, no mini cycle with slate. Yours doesn't look bad. A little too uniform to be natural, but certainly not bad at all! If the fish and you like it, that's what counts.
looks nice
The angel looks really mean in that 1st picture. Once my tank is stabilized i think i will get an angel or 2 not sure whats good for my tank.
And i can see your sag is really taking off so many new sprouts.
I did undergo a mini cycle, well my water is still cloudy but not sure if its from the slate since i had to do a full move around.

lol i clicked your sig and it led me there.. I was also surprised why it would be down there without any pix but then again it was posted 2003 and maybe the link to the pix died off just like in all other old threads.. But i am sure im not the only one who wants to see your updates.

Whew, ok I was getting worried about the mini-cycle. Yeah, I did a major move around of things and took some things out. My pleco gets *really* stressed whenever I do anything in the tank so I'm hoping his new cave will help that. he was too big for the rock that he tried to hide behind before. He's 8 inches long!
What plant is this behind the angel?

Hygrophila difformis (a.k.a. wisteria). Neat plant albeit a bit invasive.
bk828, no, the link for pics still works. My most recent pics have been diy projects and pics of inhabitants, not the tanks themselves :)
Yesterday finally used up the remaining pieces of the slate and made another slate wall for my 10g. This one is smaller but higher. Will post pictures as soon as my internet starts working good..

Is the foam actually needed? If not, what purpose does it serve? Great project, I might make one myself. :)

The foam is not really necessary. I used mine to make the wall taller and give it balance so it wont shift.
Heres the "mini" wall for another tank

Definitely do not need foam for a wall this size. One rock in my wall is the size of that entire wall (length and width, not height) so there's a bit more weight. That does look fantastic!!!
btw, there's two links in my sig, one is specs, the other pics :)

Turned out great. When I saw the first pics of that wall, I thought it was real. Had no idea they were model scale. They make a great addition to that tank. I may give it a try sometime.
