I was wondering, could you add standard bricks to an aquarium? The bricks in question were to be used on my grandparents house but they never used them. The bricks have sat out in the weather for probably around 30 years i would say now.

Never tried it. I reckon they would be fine though similar to clay pots most of us place in our tanks.

I would either boil them or soak them in hot salt water for a long long time. Or you can just go get a new brick (a buck) and only clean it for 1/4 the time.

I wouldn't boil them. Aging bricks aren't such a fan of high heat. Scrub them down, through some acetic acid on them to see if there's any kind of mineral deposit and then go with it.

never hurts to test if it will screw with water chem (buckets work nicely). Even then, my gut feeling is that bricks would be fine.

I don't think they would hurt anything as long as they were clean. I am very interested in how you're going to use them though

Make sure to knock any mortar off! Mortar is lime-based and could raise your pH. Other than that, like everyone else said so long as it's clean it should be fine. Terracotta is inert.

I will keep everyone up to date when i start but i live in ohio and the bricks are burried by a blizzard that just went through so it might be awhile yet.

Well i decided to change out my whole tank. I went with a sand bottom. My grandfather also had theese nice quickcrete bricks instead of regular bricks and i think they worked out alot better. Here are some pics, the first ones are how my tank looked before.
