Check this Flowerhorn and click the live video to appreciate the size of his hump. http://www.flowerhorn.com.my/gallery_view.asp?id=155&page=2
Is there any species fish (not hybrid) out there that can beat this guy for hump size?

That reminds me of the short sumo wrestler who to make the minimum height requirement had silicone injected into his scalp (it sagged, and he didn't qualify).

I personally find that ugly. Never have liked fish with nuchal humps. Buy this one especially looks like its forhead is about to explode.

I just read this thread at Aquamojo's forum yesterday...What do you think? (http://208.51.130.220/~mojo/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=CA_SA;action=display;num=1056707099)
Here's the pic, http://www.aquamojo.com/misc/Ito_ang_kok.jpg
FROM AQUAMOJO.COM
It is a super male Haitiensis, a Jeff Rapps fish that is 4" with that hump. There is also some video linked to in the post.
I think chichlidscene's midas also has a huge hump.

Yea I saw the pic @ MoJo's... that Haitiensis looks freaky... But you know it's not some fake or a hormone induced hump... gotta love a reliable person like Jeff Rapps :)
Cichlid Scene's citrinellum is a beast. Every time I see a picture of it I have to laugh out loud. Come to think of it the man doesn't have many fish that DON'T grow a nuchal hump...'cept maybe his foot long Clown Loaches.
I think Cichlid Scene should be the Nuchal Champion. :D

I still don't think the Haitiensis or Cichlidscene's Midas can beat the Flowerhorn hump size.
Pet and pet owner resemble one another. I am afraid one day Cichlidscene will turn into this:
http://www.flowerhorn.com.my/kb.asp
Not a bad feacture though because according to Eastern superstition, big forehead is a sign of longivity, beauty and good fortune.
Contrary to criticism of hybrid fish in the west, Flowerhorn competition are big events in the east. One measurement of beauty is the size of the hump. I think we should host pageant competition here for species nuchal hump. Which species do you think will likely win:
Frontosa
Midas
Trimac
G. brazillinis
G. Bolzani
Green Terror
African Buffalo Head
?
For fair competition, the criterion should be based on relative size to the body, not the absolute size.

Wow! This GT comes head to head with the Flowerhorn. Without a ruler, it's hard to tell who is the champ. Personality wise, the Flowerhorn has an edge because he was fearless, charging at the camera.
Not all humps are equal. Frontosa's hump is permanent, made up of of fat and tissue. GT's hump is like male penis, filled with liquid that can expand or contract in hours depending on motivational level. I am not sure about Flowerhorn because I have never owned one.
Is there other contestant?
Here is a picture of FH's big hump. Man...that got to be very heavy.

I tend to like more subtle humps, but I'm not a female cichlid last time I checked...I think that Front humps are the most attractive of all of them...does anyone else share my opinion? (Besides valerie, who doesn't like them at all!)

I agree, Dave...I seriously want to pop that thing because it looks like a huge pimple that doesn't belong there!!!
Yeah...that thing is very ugly. I wonder if the fish swims with his tail in the air. :D There are some others that I have found...FH with huge...gigantic...hump. Surprise the fish still can swim and see.
Anyone has a needle? I would love to try to pop it and see what will come out of that hump...an alien...or another FH :D

Yeah...um...I don't think that I'll help you in that endeavor, peifc...:)

LOL! if that was my fish my wife would have already popped it!

My dad would make short work of a nuchal hump as well...if my sister didn't tell him to make me get that creepier-than-usual fish outta the house!
Here is another pic of FH that has almost the same size as the pic I posted. This one sure looks like a huge pimple.

That's just disturbing...it's almost translucent!
Oh...I saw more FH that looks worst. There was this FH that looks like a pig...I mean...really looks like a pig.
You wouldn't believe how many people who love FH will fall for this look.
The start of FH crazed is because a guy who obtained a FH...and he won lotto...I mean a lot...when his FH developed a huge hump. So...the myth started that the bigger the hump is...the better luck or life you get. I have nothing against Chinese. I'm Chinese myself, but sheesh...I don't believe this stuff. Superstitious!
ChilDawg

Despite the seemingly heavy reliance on superstition, the Chinese have a thriving culture...there may actually be something to it, but scientific tests will have to be performed.

Maybe the guy was actually lucky to have perceived beauty in the fish and somehow perceived beauty in certain lottery numbers?

:D You haven't seen the ugliest yet. There are people who kept them and think they are pretty.
I mean...Midas, Red Devil, and some other cichlids that develop humps, but they do that naturally. FH is hybrid...breeders tried to make bigger and bigger humps. The bigger...the more expensive they are. That's just not making sense. I will buy a fish if it is rare in nature even if it costs a lot (only if I have money ). Can't believe sometimes that people will buy an expensive fish that made by human.

Yeah! It is all about luck. If it was really true regarding the hump that associate with luck...sheesh...I believe a lot of fish owners would be rich by now (fish that has hump). And if it was true, I would abandon my pure breed cichlids and go for the ugly b*tt hole.
Here is another ugly fish just for you to enjoy.
Guess what it is....

Thats a beautiful fish. Im gonna say its a crazy red Flowerhorn.

Nope! It is called King Kong Blood Parrot. It does have the Midas and Red Devil's temper. It can even co-exist with FH, Trimac, Midas, and Red Devil.
There are some King Kong Blood Parrot that is very ugly. I guess the one I posted happened to look better than most :D

yea that king kong blood parrot is not that ugly comparted to the first FH and the one Gt in the video. they are both far more ugly that that blood parrot.

I don't know... maybe I'm too traditional, but I find these fish that are selectively bred to emphasize certain features to be kind of freakish.
A frontosa or Cyrtocara moori with a handsome nuchal hump is interesting because it has, for some reason, occurred naturally. That someone can breed a species (or cross breed with other species) to emphasize some particular trait is just pedestrian, I think.
Nature is much more interesting in its creations than are these selective breeders...

I thought the FH craze started because the guy that won the lotto based his numbers off of the similarities of his FH black markings and numbers in the chinese alphabet?
oh yea and if thats a blood parrot, thats the best looking one I have ever seen..........
no offense peifc

Agreed just look at the blue dempsey.........
:D You are allowed to think that way, Jim. Nothing wrong with wanna keep fish pure.

I guess so...still...it was all about superstitious.
You didn't offend me, Dave. I keep a few Blood Parrots too (my first fish and cichlids), but not the King Kong type. King Kong Blood Parrot can get to 12", about the same size as Midas (and got mean teeth to match with personality).
What about Blue Dempsey? Confused.

He was talking about natures creations being interesting, I just brought up the blue dempsey as an interesting non hybrid "rareity". I think that they are beautiful fish. The fact that they are not man made is what blows my mind, that and how one small recessive gene can make a fish look so much different than the regular ones.
I have no problem with blood parrots any more than I have problems with people who are half black half white. As long as you get enjoyment out of your fish that is all that matters, I just dont find them attractive. Thats all.

I don't find them attractive either (BP). I just found them funny looking. With my stressful job...yeah...I need something to laugh at when I get home :D
Yeah...the BD is very beautiful. Not only their look is different, their personality is different too, IMO.

Those humps do make cichlids look funny. Are you guys sure that this is not a deformity?

I don't know if that's consider as deform, but there are many pure cichlids that do have huge hump. Look at cichlidscene's Midas. That fish sure has a huge hump but it is all natural. As for the FH's hump...I doubt that is considered as natural since they are already hybrid.

Im sure the knots can grow naturally but did anyone ever do any research to see if that hump is not a natural deformity?
THose humps just doesnt look right being on fish. Just my opinions!
Actually, I notice some Midas hump grow bigger when they feel that there is an opponent. Hmm...I think I should research into this. The hump doesn't grow for a reason. It is either related to breeding or just trying to look big :D However, if female grows hump...then that will be in question...won't it?

Please clarify, as any deviation from a perceived mean may be a "natural deformity"...yes, a statistician is on the other end of this conversation...how did you guess? :)

Until I see this picture, I was in the opinion that Frontosa and Moori have the most natural looking and attractive hump. If there is no camera trick, this Frontosa is the champ based on his hump size relative to the body.
I am not suprised that there is always another FH that has a bigger hump because they were seletively bred and raised for that feacture. But I am pleased to see that there are species out there that can beat FH.
I can't find any picture though but I have seen old groupers in public aquarium that have immense hump and personally, I had hooked a big male sea bass before that has an impressive hump.

I have to agree with all the people who have said that the hump is ugly... I found this pic of a midas cichlid http://www.aquahobby.com/gallery/gmidas.html
and i think it's the ugliest cichlid i've ever seen. Everything about it is ugly, it has this blotchy yellow colour and it's quite chubby on the sides. I don't think I could stand having a fish with a big hump... I'd probably end up poking it with a pin or something and watch it shoot around the tank like a balloon. What do they use the horn for? Probably ram the **** out of the other fish in the tank....

more likely than not, the hump is what is attractive to the female.
And thast's what counts!! :)

Correct :) It is like...Peacock has great and colorful tail to attract female. This is what we call...sexual evolution :D Always interesting to learn how nature works.
