my sig is off big time.. right now i have a 5 gallon with a breeding pair of 1.5 inch JB pink cons. and i have a 29 gallon with a male convict and soon to be gone male jack dempsey.. can i add a firemouth or 2 to the 29 once the JD is gone??i want to get back into keeping Firemouths. so i may get rid of my JD and my con at the same time and pick up 4 or 5 juvi FM to wait for a pair.

your fish are all WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too large to be housed in tanks the size youve listed for very long. they will outgrow them quickly, especially if you are trying to breed them. please do some research on the minimum tank size of each fish before buying them

ive decided ( and have researched ) im just gunna get one firemouth and keep my convict and thats all that will be in the 29. and all thats gunna be in the 10 is just a breeding pair of jellybean cons that max out at 4 inches but right now there 1.5 inches.

they need a bigger tank, as inky stated!
livebearerfreak
06-25-2008, 8:58 PM
these are the only 2 tanks i can have up.
livebearerfreak

the JD is leaving. the male con is almost 5 inches.

these are the only 2 tanks i can have up.
If you can only have those two tanks, you may want to start keeping fish that will be happy in them, and not cramped.

if you cannot keep the appropriate housing, why not get fish that can do well in tanks that size? you can get rams. they are cichlids, good breeders and dont get above 3". they are colorful and active and dont need huge tanks. if you keep the fish you listed in small tanks, the odds are they wont breed anyway because they will be stressed out. you also run the risk of stunting them. not to mention that they may grow sickly or die because they will produce more waste than the tank/filters can handle. take the fish back and get ones that will thrive in a smaller tank
livebearerfreak

firemouths dont get bigger then a 29 can handle tho. and im useing a filter that came with the 29 packaged and another filter thats rated for 30-60 gallons both on the 29 gallon so i have 2 filters already.
inkyjenn
06-26-2008, 9:14 AM
yes but you have more than just a firemouth in there. that hang on back filter wont be enough. i had a 6 inch pleco that kept crashing a 29 gallon. keep the fire mouth then and get rid of the rest of the fish.

also, if you come on the board looking for advice, expect to get it and quit arguing. listen to the people who are here with more experience. generally speaking, they wont steer you wrong and your fish will be much happier for it.
i just read up on firemouths. one can be housed in a minimum of 27 gallons. more than one requires at least 55 gallons since they are territorial. seriously, research some fish that will work in your tank sizes
livebearerfreak
06-26-2008, 9:31 AM
ok then ill stick to the firemouths. i want to get 2 so i can pick out the best one later tho, is that fine?
inkyjenn
06-26-2008, 9:36 AM
didnt you just read what i said? two needs at least 55. one is fine. if you want more fish, get smaller fish or a bigger tank
livebearerfreak
06-26-2008, 9:38 AM
yes i read what u said. and accept that to. but these firemouths are at 2.5 inches thats why i was askin if i can have 2 tell they hit the 4 inch mark then id get rid of one.

I am of the opinion that if you take on the care of a living thing, you should be ready to care for it for its entire life, not just get rid of it when you're tired of it or can't take care of it any more. Plan ahead. If you can't care for it for its whole life, don't take on the responsibility in the first place.

Please recao..
what tanks do you have and what are the inhabitants?
I see an angels too..where is that ?
Part of the problem is we may not be getting complete information.

hes listed them. read the second post on the first page. the cons are probably smaller hence the mfk people telling you to keep them they give pretty good advice too

right at this moment i have one 29 one 5. on the 3rd ill be getting a 10 gallon to replace the 5 so i can give the 5 back to my friend. 29 has 1 male JD bout 3 inches one 5 inche male con and an angelfish. one kholio loach ( partner died and had them for almost a year to ) 1 common algea eater bout 4 inches ( my uncle got him for me cause of my algea, i now a mistake buy to ) 1 gold groumie on one side and one blue groumie on the other side.. 5 gallon has a pair of 1.25 inche breeding pink jellybean cons laid eggs 2 times and hatched 2 times. and one groumie as a dither.
heres whos gunnna go.
male JD
kholio loach
all the groumies
possiabbly the common algea eater
and MAYBE the convict if i decide to get the FMs.
livebearerfreak
06-26-2008, 10:04 AM

livebearerfreak

I think we may be better if you list what you plan.
but you did not mention the angel till later. the angel is not compatible with con's and my have issues with the firemouths..and you can NOT place an angel in a 10 for very long. so that leaves the 29..which would work for the angel.
however, did I see a notch near the head of that angel?

There is definitely something on the angels head, not sure what though. Its hard to tell from the pic, livebearerfreak can you get a good picture of the angel?
Also, livebearerfreak, when you say that you will get rid of fish, what do you actually do with them when you get rid of them?
livebearerfreak
06-26-2008, 12:02 PM
bring tham to the LFS for credits. i made a new plan so is this one ok, can i have 2 male cons in the same tank only thing is itll be divided. and sure ill get a better pic of the angel soon
trashion
06-26-2008, 12:09 PM
I don't think that's a good idea, as they need SPACE. Dividing the tank gives them only half the sace. Why don't you get something that will be happy in a smaller tank?
livebearerfreak
06-26-2008, 12:16 PM
well i now my JB pair will be staying in there 10 gallon so i can have a supply of free feeders so i want summtin thats aggressive but doesnt outgrow my tank.
livebearerfreak
06-26-2008, 12:33 PM
well looks like i may be staying with either my male convic hybrid or get a juvi firemouth ( 1 ) with some dithers like some type of barbs
livebearerfreak
06-26-2008, 12:35 PM
our of curiasity ( not gunna do this ) but can i get a BP = blood parrot as a tank mate?? again JW

you have too many fish already for your tanks. please don't buy any more.
livebearerfreak
06-26-2008, 1:02 PM
well as u read, im getting rid of all my fish but the con or i may get rid of him and get a FM. the pair of JB cons are staying tho.

So if I have this correct, after you do all your rearranging, you plan on having either a convict or a firemouth in the 29, and the pair of jellybean convicts in the 10?
krytan
06-26-2008, 1:20 PM
I would put the pair of cons in the 29g (a 10g is to small) re-home ALL the other fish and stock the 10g with more suitable fish.
livebearerfreak
06-26-2008, 1:26 PM
hmmmm u gave me an idea, ill do that ( pr JB cons in the 29 ) and ill stock the 10 with 8 neons 4 platys 10 ghost shrimps 6 rosey reds and a male betta. does that sound fine or whats ur guyes idea for a 10 community?? o and 6 cory cats or 4 otos
Sploke
06-26-2008, 1:29 PM
I had a 10gal setup that I liked, a betta and 8 white clouds, with lots of plants. the list you gave for your 10gal is too many fish IMO.

Sorry i forgot to mention the tank you have the angel fish and con in appears to be hanging over the edge of the stand it is on. This is extremely dangerous, the weight of the water and the tank not being supported properly will cause the glass to crack and empty aquarium water over your floor.
livebearerfreak
06-26-2008, 2:43 PM
been like that for the last 5 months
Sarge_857
06-26-2008, 2:51 PM
i noticed one issue that noone recognized with your pictures. your tank is not fully supported all the way around, no part of the tank bottom should hang off AT ALL!!!!
krytan
06-26-2008, 2:57 PM
It's asking for trouble in the future. When it does crack it will happen suddenly.

omg convict_breeder...I was literally just reading how you got banned off MFK...and now you are here on AC starting the exact same threads with the same drama you had over there...
He had a thread like this about every day on MFK with 20 people telling him the tank's way too small etc., this is all stuff he has heard before from people at MFK, and obviously he's just not absorbing the information or choosing to ignore it. Just wanted to give everyone a heads up.
