Most of them get to be pretty big, like the red snake head which can get over 1m in length. They like big tanks and are usually a solitary fish. They can do some pretty bad damage to fish there own size as well. They will eat just about anything that fits into their mouths, including a 10 inch texas tank mate, but will eat bigger fish than that. Other than that what else do you want to know?

Are you talking about the US? I heard they over run a really big lake somewhere in the states, and I forgot to mention they can live out of water for a day or two.

Yeah, they are illegal in some states in the US. Make sure they are legal where you live.... fines can be quite hefty.

Japan is fine, actually I have not come across a fish that is illegal yet. It must be because all of Japan has a very cold winter.

Hah, there was an over-run of these in Michigan. One owner SLEPT on top of his fish tank. He came home on night and the mattress was moved over like a foot in one corner. The fish escaped via an open door.

Another instance, was a snakehead swam and hit the top of the tank. There were 3 bricks on top and the snakehead hit those off and jumped out.

In Nebraska, their introduction to native waters has not only led to a ban on buying them or importaing them, but the Nebrasja Game and Parks Comission embarked on a plan in October to buy the fish back from any aquarists that already had them. Only prob. was the prices: the max was $10 for anything over 12 inches long. Don't think they realize the cost to buy them in the first place...

As I said before very hard to sex them. There are no colouration differences or distinctive markings that either male or female possess, they can only be sexed when they become adults, the male being bigger than the female. So in reality to sex a snakehead you would need to have a male and a female together to compare. Like I said very difficult to sex. :) And as for breeds, I had a red snakehead , very aggresive fish, but very fun.

Yes, they are very difficult to sex. Supposedly they can be sexed by the width of their heads, the broader head meaning a male, but I havn't found this to be true. There are some dwarf species, the smallest of which only gets to around 5" (Channa orientalis). C. maruloides is fairly unaggressive, but the majority of the others are fairly aggressive, and some are extremely aggressive (such as C. micropeltes). Their presence in the US is VERY much overblown, they cause no more damage than carp or other ferral animals that have been in US waters for a long time. Even North American catfish and bass (neither one of these is native to the western US) that have been introduced into US waters where they are not native do MUCH more damage than snakeheads, yet they are still legal in every state that I know of.

This may be a stupid question, but how would anyone ever know if it's in your house? Even if you have a "friend" over and he rats you out to the police, they are extremely unlikely to raid the house.

Below are some pics from asian fishing trips. Do you really care how to sex something this big? Are you planning on breeding them in ponds?

That is a very stupid question, shame on you.....

:D JK man, its a legit problem though. Well, in illegal states you have neighbors, upset family members, parol officers, even some intellegant police. Doesn't take much for a jealous\angry one of those people to hear the word snakehead and google it. After that, a short call to F&W..your fish get confiscated and you get fined...300 a piece for piranhas, last I checked...but not sure if its higher for snakeheads...

I think the Snakehead fish may be illegal to bring into the US. Customs will not let live Snakeheads in and the Snakehead (especially the Chinese), are on the US Fish & Wildlife list of fish not to be brought into the US. It all started about 3 years ago in MD. When two were introduced in a small pond in MD. After about 2 year, US Fish and Wildlife poisioned the Lake and killed 60 Snakeheads, but they spread rapidly throughout the east coast. Dozens of lakes were poisioned to kill the fish. They never really got them under control. But, US F&G put them on their list and many states passed laws.

They are a mence even here in Thailand.

Lepisosteus- To say that snakeheads cause no more damage than carp is to say that this small nuclear weapon will cause no more damage than this large nuke. Common Carp have devastated many river & lake ecosystems nationwide. In Texas, there are many rivers where it is hard to find any other fish species besides carp.

Carp don't have the ability to flop from one body of water to another as some snakeheads do. Snakeheads are much more predatory than carp, and their impact on North American aquatic habitat is completely unpredictable as thus far snakehead incidents have been localized.

Until fish & game departments nationwide begin carp eradication programs the only thing we can do is prevent introduction of other invasive species.

Regarding the introduction of basses and catfishes to the US West of the Rockies. The incompetence of state fish & game depts outside Texas is not my problem.

Texas law:

" It is illegal in this state to release into public waters, import, sell, purchase, transport, propagate, or possess any living snakehead, except under special permits issued by TPWD. Dead snakeheads (intestines removed) may be legally imported and sold."

As a teen I had a red snakehead that killed three large cats the same way but they were supposed to be tankmates not food. He ate an albino channel, and two shovelnoses. Each were about 8" long and he left the heads like in the video. I never witnessed the attack though I did see him eat 22 goldfish in about 10 minutes.
Now that i know more about proper housekeeping / maintenance can't imagine the water changes a fish like that would require. Install an overflow and leave the tap running I guess.
