Hurdle, do you live close to Jackson? If so, try and see if B&C Aquarium is still open. They carried a few different varities of piranhas...I saw one-eyed ones in there a few times. That's a good 'Mom & Pop' store that has a lot of really nice fish. I haven't been in there in years, and I remember hearing 'Pop' talk about closing the place, so it might not be there anymore.
They've got kind of a weird law here in SC about piranhas, they are legal to own but not legal to sell and you can't have a male and a female in your possesion at the same time. I'd kind of like a couple, but I'm sorta scared of them too. I know I'd forget myself and stick my hand in the water at some point.

i probably will do that too on accident once but i live in williamston
sky.eyes.woman
07-13-2005, 11:01 PM
Ah, well...I'm not sure where Williamston is, but you can probably find some closer to you. There's piranhas all over the place there, which was hard for me to get used to seeing in the stores there since I grew up in Florida. The lady at B&C laughed at me when I first saw them in there and was all like, "OMG! You sell PIRANHAS here?!?! How is that legal?" I hadn't thought of how cold it gets there, hehe.

Cool to see a fellow Piranha fan here.....I have had my RBP's for about 9 months now, well I had them but recently like a month ago one just attacked the other and ate about 60 percent of him, so now my RBP is all alone in the tank. They got along great before that and just totally anihilated anything that entered the tank (only when the lights go off and I leave the room). I have a recent thread about all the things I have fed them. They pretty much eat anything and are very, very hardy.

haha thats cool. im glad i got a fellow piranha guy on here too.. sorry about ur lost.. i have owned pirnahas for about a year.. but i have many stories to share....lol
i had 3 baby reds in a 22g tank... after 3 months. the biggest killed 2 of them, so i sold him
bought 5 babies, raised them in the 22g, bought a 45g tank. moved them in there.. they started fighting, so i sold 2 of them.. so now i have 3 reds... haha

Hey ofa, does yours tailslap you? mine didn't before but he has become considerably more aggressive since he is alone now. I have been the victim of that many time recently. I have seen him tail slap and break my thermometer and crack my heater, he has completely tore up all my fake plants. Its funny cuz one day I'll see him run into a hard plant leaf, then the next day the exact same leaf will be floating, just clipped right off....

On the contrary, RBP's are very shy and skittish, they haven't really bit me (with the exception of one time early on when I was being stupid lol) I can practically move him with the gravel vac now, its quite comical

I know they wont eat it :duh: I've had no qualms about putting my hand in the tank, so I know allready that they are usually nice, but its funny the first time you get tailslapped  I was shocked that he did that then I wanted to filet him, then I just accepted it (three step program). All in all, I wish I had the money\tank size to get a black rhom at the time, but we'll see what happens soon.

Mine is a 29g right now, I just bought a 55g for him that will go through a cycle soon. He is ok for now, only about 6 inches. The lettuce\cucumber idea is very tricky. you HAVE to use a vegi clip since it floats. and I had to turn all lights off and wait. I was patient enough to wait 5 days before feeding him. he wouldn't eat that stuff until the 4th or 5th day.....Its nice to just water the garden and go pick some earthworms out. Try those, its safe and free! They should like those, my RBP just attacks when I toss them in there. Any wounded bugs or insects go in the tank pretty much. As far as rats and mice, never do it. It clouds your water very bad, clogs your filter and messes up ur tank chemistry pretty bad.

I have not had Piranha in years. I like them and would not mind getting some again, but the wife does not want me to get any. The main reason, the feeding of goldfish.
Although I have thought they might be able to eat pellet food. I have also gotten into lizards again so I could feed meal worms as well.
Here's a picture of the Piranha I had many years ago.

The problem being that feeder goldfish are so un-nutrional and disease prone, you should just feed them fathead minnows, my RBP loves them and I have a reliable source so that I don't have to raise my own. I would suggest getting them again as well.

i know gold fishr bad for feeding, but they r kinda cheap and they like to hunt for them.
sublime1184
07-16-2005, 5:34 PM
Local Bait Shop gives me a half dozen for 50 cents. Fathead minnows are a much, much better choice for feeders, and are about the same in cost, maybe a little more but I don't think so....

any local bait shop carries them and they are cheap as can be, as cheap as or cheaper than comets or rosies. Plus they are better for fish to eat than goldfish. They are considered feeders so if you got a bait shop near you, go for it! In my case, my LBS is closer and carries healthy minnows....so it works for me.

My buddy has 4 red bellies in a 55 gallon.
and has a Serrasalmus manueli (biggest species of piranha known) juvinile in a 30 gallon. which is moving to a 125. since they get about 2-3'
Personally, I really dont think piranhas are worth it. they aren't very active fish. They just bob there, until they are fed. and even during feeding, by no means is it the frenzy one would expect. just casual nips for a while until the prey is gone.
they have the reputation though, which is 80% false. they are some of the most skittish fish i've seen. You walk in the room, and they bash into the glass on the other side of the tank trying to escape.
I'd have to say if your really looking to get an agressive fish, get a flowerhorn, or a snakehead. snakeheads have the power. and flowerhorns? **** I wouldnt want to be 20ft near a flower horn in a pond.
I'd have to say piranhas are mainly cool for the reason that you can go around and tell people HEY MAN I GOT PIRANHAS! and they'll be like **** DUDE! WHOA!. If you starve em for a week, they'll put on a good show though.
my 2 cents.

my LFS scares me the way they deal with their pirahnas. they put them with a 3 in tall, 1 foot wide opening on the top of the tank, and the aisle is only 3 feet wide! once i saw 1 jump around and i was scared it would jump out and get me! :thud:

Its true that many Piranhas (including RB's) are skittish, shy and timid. However, rhoms, both peruvian and venezuelan, (among others like black diamonds, elongatuss, altuvie, irritan for example, in fact, any Serrasalmus piranha is highly aggresive and suggested as single speciman tanks) are very, very, very aggressive and active. A buddy of mine had once had a peruvian rhom in a huge tank, 125g I believe, and it would growl when you enter the room (a growl that could be heard 20+ feet away). The water would vibrate and drip out if the level was high enough. He would attack the glass trying to get the dog that would trot by. He would follow me viciously as I mover around the tank. It was an amazing thing, I cared for it while he was on vacation and I had to use a seperater (a home made one with steel mesh) to clean the tank. If you see the jaws on that guy and the look of the red eye, you would be amazed. It complete tore up his tank; fake plants, heater, airline tubing, structures, filters, etc.... If something was in his path, it was gone the next hour, if not then. After gvacing I would move rocks around, you could hear the rocks scrape the glass as he pushed all obstructions into the corner. His nose had a permant dent that was formed from ramming the glass and decor and rocks....Completely crazy and aggressive beyond belief. The most common thing is that the most aggressive piranha is the one that is the starving. A red belly would not hesitate to tear into anything if he was hungry enough. Just a little info I thought I'd share.

I caught a piranha once in Brazil. I wrapped some fishing line in copper wire and then put a chunk of meat on the hook. Dropped it in and had a fish in about 2 seconds. It was then flopping around and I was wearing sandles...that raised the pulse a little.

I found that my water was very hard, so I slowly changed to softer water. It helped the tempermant of my 2 5" RBPs a lot. Even though we're not supposed to, once in a while, I'll go buy a big Fantail goldfish $2.30 @ lfs and get a group together, up to 10 guys will come to watch... they tear those guys up immediately. The first time, the goldfish swam over to say hello, and one of the piranha's bit his face off. half of one eye, and the entire mouth. And the goldfish just kept swimming like everything was fine, stupid fish.
While these are hardy fish, they will be happier and more fun to watch in some better water, with dim light...

I bought a dozen RBP's about a month ago. Over the course of the first 2 weeks I lost most of them to transport death or cannibalism. I now have 6 stable in a 30 gallon at about an inch and a half to 2 inches. They do not eat my live plants , I can easily work in the tank with out them bothering me (I use a net to force them to a corner then work on the other corner of the tank) and they know when they are going to get fed. To minimize algae and enhance aggressiveness I keep my tank lights on very little. Usually 4on, 8off, 4on, 8off. Once I approach the tank and turn on the lgiht they all rise to the top and come forward towards the glass because when i turn on the lights I always feed. If the light doesnt go on they ignore me. As for food Ive been using flakes and frozen blood worms. They like it. Since adding more plants, broken clay pots and driftwood they seem much more aggressive and less skittish. Frequently, I will see 2 less in the tank then ill find them creeping through the leaves of an amazon sword or hiding in the shadows of the clay pots. They rise faster and more aggressive at food then I have ever seen. This could be due to them growing older and gaining more predatory skills but environment could be a possible input for this as well. Im also looking into blackwater extract to murk up the water. Anyone done this yet? Any reco's where to buy and any tips?
To start get no more than 7 no less than 5 and try this set up, its working for me...if i can find a camera ill get some pictures up.
30 gallon
Whisper 40 external
Air Pump w/ stone
50 watt heater
Temp: 78-80
pH: 6.8 - 7.0
Driftwood to add softenness
2 - 3" of gravel
8 live plants incl Amazon Swords, Peruvian Swords, Grasses, Bamboos
2 broken clay pots to add additional shelter
4on,8off,4on,8off light cycle to allow plant life, algae minimization and keep tank dark to add aggressiveness to fish
Feed 2 - 3 times a day as much as they can consumer in 2-3 mins.
Overall, a fun fish to keep. My next step is freshwater barracuda. Im looking for a 55g hex to keep 3 of the RBP when they get to be 4 - 5" and sell the rest. Then raise 3 2" fw barracudas in the 30 until they outgrow.

30g-cichlids, red tailed shark, tiger barbs,2 neons, red bellied pacu
What are you going to do with the Pacu once it outgrows that 30-gallon tank you've got him in? I expect that he's already too big if he's more than four months old. They grow fast, and at least over 18 inches in length and easily more than 10 pounds in weight.

and the person that said something about getting more then 7 and no less then 5... thats wrong. get any number of them as u want.. atleast 1 or 3... but not 2.... and that was good info...
my reds r getting big, i have 2 left, one jus died abou 2 weeks ago.. got eatn.. like 1/2 gone.. scary.
and for my pacu, hes about 7'' getting big and carnivours.. i know crazy.. !! i am gonna try and add him to my prianha tank and see what happens.. lol

in a corner three wouldn't work IMO...in fact, I can't think of any P's I would put in a 54 corner. Reds are not too cool as one or two together...and like I said before OAR, one or three, not two...I wouldn't add the pacu...the reds are gonna show aggression towards each other in due time, and one will be the dominate jerk. I know from experience...at any rate, sorry for your loss. Good to see ya back....but ya gotta tell me, how did you get banned from P-fury? LOL

haha yeah thats a good deal.
yeah 3 would be alright... or 2.... and i know.. thats what i said. have one red, three reds, or 4+ reds in a tank. so they will get along... they have to grow up with each other.... well i still am gonna add the pacu.. worst case scenario, both reds killl it and bond, get closer and like each other... nice and healthy meal, or maybe the pacu will take control, it is bigger and has been eating chrimp and other fish, its crazy... lol. but i will let u know what happens..lol
and for p-fury... i dont really know.. its so effing dumb. i cant go on it.!!!

I kept a black Pirahna in an 18GH for about a year. He was a cool fish! I wasn't very responsable then, and I ended up giving him back to the LFS. Feeding him was starting to become a chore, but watching him eat was good times!

Hello all,
I have been in the hobby for 30+ years and Breeding for a little over
12 yrs.
As a youngster I kept around 40 Black Piranhas in a 150 , my brother had a c_t that just couldn't keep his paws out of the tank I even placed a bungie cord on the top to hold down the lid and one day I went to feed them the gold fish from the LFS and to my surprise all I saw was bones and fur . They still ate the Goldfish I bought ,(what a mess cleaning out the tank.)
I just picked up 5 RB , I use them to take care of our Culls . I forgot how nasty they can be, I was cleaning their tank with a paper towel and one of them nipped me . All I saw was blood , their teeth are soo sharp all I felt was the fish bump my hand. (they have grown 1" in a month )
It's neat watching them get ready for food and the way they work together .

if your thinking about getting them to let you know they are illegal to buy sell trade and own in alot of states and georgia is one of them sorry for the bad news your state waters are good breeding grounds for piranaha when they get to much for people to handle they trow them in the wild not a good thing

Hello piranha thread. I'd love to get a nice big tank and a group of red bellies. But they're not legal in MA. It makes me sad. However, I'm halfway through the process of getting accepted as an aquarium volunteer and they have a nice group of them so I'll get to clean their tank out! Woohoo!

I had a RBP tank a long time ago. I got them when they were about dime-sized and they were probably 5" when I gave them away a year or so later. They were just too shy for where that tank was located (with three kids and all their friends in and out, there was a lot of walking back and forth by their tank, which made them freak out) and I didn't have another place to put that tank.
I just cleaned their tank like I did the rest of mine, though. They just went to one corner of the tank and moved away from me, corner to corner, until I was done cleaning. I did have to be careful about not making really quick movements when my hands were in their tank, because they would freak out and swim into the side of the tank and bonk themselves, but they never swam at me or bit me, but I did keep a close eye on them - lol. I had a tank divider that I originally bought to use when cleaning their tank, but ended up never needing it.
They did have a tendency to beat up on each other once in a while and they killed one of their own after they got to around 3". They are just a little shy, IMO, so I would put their tank somewhere slightly dark and where there isn't a lot of traffic back and forth by their tank.
