I'd like a school of smaller tetras in my 40 gallon which also houses two angels and two festivums. I'd ike some colourful, active fish to liven things up. Any Suggestions?

Aside from the usual suspects(neons).
How about some glolight tetras, or
pristellas. Some cardinal tetras would also be nice. Maybe even some rummy nose.

My favorite schooling fish is the Harlequin Rasbora. I've got 7 of them in my 55g tank along with a school of 8 Pristellas and I want to find a new home for the Pristellas so I can get more Rasboras!

Blues or silver tips. Rummynose are very colorful, as well.

Angels will eat a whole bunch of smaller fish, neons and cardinals included. (I had originally written excluded, but that was obviously wrong.) I do not believe that your angels will work with glo-lites either. Anything the same size as those or smaller, or a little larger with the same general shape will be angel food. I do not know what Festivums will do, but beware the nasty nature of angels, especially with tetras who are new tankmates and thus seen as food.

I would be cautious given the angels. That said, my favorite colorful, active tetras are Rummynose and Lemon tetras

Bleeding Heart Tetras are cool and so are X-Ray Tetras. I added some to my tank very recently and they look great.

I like the idea of pristellas or cardinals. Neons are just too small, I lost 17 to my angels the first time around.

Maybe either like someone said Buenos Aires tetras or some lampeye(red eye) tetras. i have some of these in my 50 gallon and they school very well especially the lamp eye's and they even school together sometimes. good luck! tell us what u decide on!

cardinals work, neons don't. I lost all but one neon to angel predation, but they didnt touch the cardinals.

Do love cardinals, what size would you'd have to get to avoid predation? I'm amazed what those angels can fit in their mouths!

Cardinal tetras do not have a long lifespan in nature; if you buy them large enough to avoid being eaten by mature angels, you are not going to have them around much longer than a year or so. Rummynose tetras, Garnet tetras (also known as Pretty Tetras), Emperor tetras, and Red and Black Phantom Tetras might be better sized/shaped for survival in your tank.

The idea of Harlequin Rasboras is also an excellent suggestion, however. From the standpoint of coloration as well as size and disposition.

Good luck.

I'm staying away from rasboras as I'm trying to keep a south american theme.

Nobody mentioned Serpae Tetras. They have the beautiful red color and don't really get very big, not likely to be Angel food either. I have had 6 for a year and they seem to keep getting redder.

I would strongly recommend rummynose tetras. They are very active and have nice colors. I enjoy watching them swim side to side in the back of my tank. IT's funny to watch the long-fin danio try to get in with their crew. He sometimes acts like he is one of them because he is also a schooling fish and doesn't have any partners. The rummys kind of let him in to. They get along with all of the fish.

My current schools are
30 Rummy noses
30 Glass blood fins
30 Cardinals
15 harlequin Rasboras
20 Red sapras
20 Danios
15 blank phantoms
Counts are estimated because I really have no idea and I aint counting

Some other odds and ends
Also I the tank are two breeding pairs of H Multisinosa
and two breeding pairs of Cichlasoma spilurum Never had a problem with predation
Out of all of these for pure schooling behavior I tend to favor the Blood fins and the rasboras.
The cardinals show little school behavior but tend to spread out in the plants.
For pure beauty I again like the Blood fins and will throw in the Cardinals and black phantoms
Hope that helped.

Diamond Tetras are very active, bigger than most Tetras, school well and very when they reach maturity
