    Zebra Danio's in warmer waters

So I picked up some Zebra Danio's to make sure everything was OK in my new 55 gallon setup about 3 weeks ago. Seeded filter media meant that the ammonia never got over .25ppm, so that was fine. I had an algae problem and introduced two BN plecos. There are also about a dozen ghost shrimp in the...

    NH Native Trout

The water is still pretty cold for dries. These were caught on Pheasant Tail Nymphs. I was using a big orange stimulator though and one of the more aggressive guys shot up and hit it. Unfortunately the hook was a bit too big for his little brookie mouth. I guess that's why they call it a...

    NH Native Trout

Went out today and caught some wild NH brookies. Lots of fun on a light fly rod.

Is the sun my "high light?"

Great suggestions everyone, thank you. I picked up a Bristlenose Pleco today, partly to help with the problem and partly because I thought he was cool. Doesn't seem like a bad decision either way. For now, I'll keep the lights the way they are and see if he makes a big enough impact. The snails...

Is the sun my "high light?"

Assuming I end up with an algae eating something to help (along w/ extra plants), will the algae supply run out? Is that when I put in algae wafers? New to this. Thanks guys.

Is the sun my "high light?"

I only have two plants in there right now, one java fern and a crypt variety. I'm running my lights about 10-12 hours a day.

Is the sun my "high light?"

Hello, I've got a new 55 gallon set up with about 12 ghost shrimp and 2 zebra danios in it. Levels are great. My lighting is a dual tube T8, 32 watts each. Normally classified as low lighting. However, it is in a room with quite a few windows and a skylight, and is just in general very bright...

Are the splotches raised, or just discolored spots?

Got Angels and Neons - What schooling fish can I swap out with the Neons?

On the contrary, I really like long finned Zebra Danios. They aren't vibrantly colored, but they do have really nice subtle tints and their activity certainly makes up for their lack of color. I think the long finned variety makes them a bit more interesting to look at as well.

    New 40 gallon from Craigslist

I like it! What's the lighting setup, and what are those plants? No CO2 I assume?

    Design Question

Any decent tanks are made to hold well more than the weight of the water inside of them. As long as your don't plan on throwing the rocks into the tank from across the room, you're safe.

    Heaters for a cold room

I've really thought about a native tank... There's a whole lot of cool stuff around here that I wouldn't even need to buy, just collect. I do a lot of fly fishing and have dreamed of a trout tank, but then I have the issue of a chiller in the summer. What are the names of some of the fish...

    Heaters for a cold room

The problem is that it gets really, really hot in the summer.

    Heaters for a cold room

I've been reading incredibly conflicting reports on this, so I figured I would just ask. I have a 55 gallon aquarium in a room that can get around 50 degrees in the winter. Filtration will be a 500 gph canister filter. Do I need to use two heaters? Or will one suffice? What wattage? Also...

Starting a 55 gallon, some questions (using natural rocks, etc)

This seems like a hell of a deal! Thoughts? http://cgi.ebay.com/Aquarium-Canister-Filter-External-CFS-500-GPH-60-100g-/110654522547?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item19c38604b3

    Help me stock my tank

Yes, if I do decide to eventually get any Ghost Catfish it will be after I'm sure the tank is very stable and I can feed them what they need. Thanks for the advice - I had missed that Bala's can get that big. Gouramis are cool, I may end up with one of those. I saw silver Lyretail...

Starting a 55 gallon, some questions (using natural rocks, etc)

A question on lighting... If I were to go the cheap way, and say buy something like this guy: http://www.acehardware.com/product/index.jsp?productId=4028832&cp=2568443.2568454.2632231.1259231 Would that be enough light for the plants? Would it be limiting in what I can put in there? Thanks...

Starting a 55 gallon, some questions (using natural rocks, etc)

Oh wow, yeah, I was thinking $150+. Also, now that I've bleached these rocks, how long should I let them soak in fresh water? Or is it even necessary? I've washed them twice and changed the water in the tub twice now.

Starting a 55 gallon, some questions (using natural rocks, etc)

I have a diatom filter, a Vortex Inner space, from a long time ago. Would running that for a little while every few weeks do the job of a canister filter? Or is it an issue of available filter media? I'm on a very tight budget (I'm a senior in high school) I'll look for Roseline's around here.
