i would think that for this project you would want to use red cedar throughout, both to make the sides / doors less distracting and to reinforce a "natural" look.

(not that i've ever seen varnished wood planks in any natural setting, but you get the idea)

We have a good start on this project, but we decided to use a smaller tank, a Marineland 37G column. I might start another new thread for it. I will be ready to put water in it in just a couple of days. I just need to put the door on the cabinet.
