The ammonia in a pH crashed tank is harmless until a water change is done, raising the pH and turning NH4+ into NH3. However, if nitrite is present that will still be extremely toxic.

Well upon finding the pH crash, the OP did a small water change, so that may have triggered the change to ammonia.
