Oh, that's too bad, but like you said, they get better with practice. That female looked nice & fat prespawning, I like her dark coloring. Are the others as chubby? You may not need to wait long with all the good food you feed them...Next!
Thanks, all. Yeah, I have 3 females and they're all raring to go. I'm actually going to be in and out of town a bunch over the next couple of weeks, so I'm hoping they hold off!
I put the male and a promising looking female in a 5.5 by themselves last week. She finally started darkening up, and has chased him into a cave. I think eggs are imminent. At this point, I'm pretty darn sure it's the female that initiates the flirtation.
More eggs. I removed the female and added a single alder cone. The male is guarding, but comes out to eat. I'm going to give him 9 days and hope he does better unless he spends a lot of time out of his cave, in which case I'll pull him and try to hatch artificially. More eggs than last time. Probably 30ish?
Welp, he was not guarding them all the carefully, so they're in a 2.5 with water flowing through the tub along with an alder cone and 1 teaspoon of salt. Hopefully, that will help with fungus. I doubled-down and put my other two females, both of whom are ripe as can be, in with the male in the 5.5
