I am also new at this, but was fortunate enough to purchase a complete system from a friend. What I have had to do however is get caught up on all of the hardware, how it performs etc. One site that I have found extremely helpful is http://www.melevsreef.com. There is a link on his site that has some basics, but you'll need to do some searching to find out exactly what you want etc. No one here can give you exact answers because you haven't given us complete information. People here can point you to a pump if they know how big of a sump you plan on purchasing. Try reading through this site first and come up with a plan of attack. BTW this guy builds sumps for sale because my sump is his sump F. It has helped me to re-devise all kinds of things within my own system so hopefully it will perform better.

I guess what questions I would have in order to help you with what knowledge I have is...

1) What are the dimensions of your stand? This will make your decision on how large of a sump you can have..
I have one of melevs sumps (sump f) but I think this one would work for you

2) how are you going to do your overflow? Are you going to tear down your tank have it modified? What are you going to do with your livestock during this process? If you are not going to modify your tank then have you found an overflow to use? I have the following, I have seen it recommended on this site, as well it supposedly will never loose its prime when there is a power failure.. Nice to know.

Once you get all of this decided you can then look at what type of piping you need which will determine the return flow you need. You can get a bigger one that you need and control the flow by doing some piping of your own using PVC and ball valves.

I had to redo my plumbing because it chose to leak after the tear down from my friends place.

As far as the refugium goes.. My LPS guy suggested that I put Live Sand, Live Rock and Macro Algae in there. His recommendation what Cheato (sp?). There are other theads on this site that go through lighting a refugium. I can't find it now but they are out there...

Hope this Helps. Best of luck, one newbie to another. :)

Ok so it has to be a tank with the compartments.. It just can be a regular 10 gallon tank?

I am sure it could as other people have smaller sumps on larger tanks. However per my previous post the information I am giving is based on my limited experience. How you would go about doing something like that would probably take some research on your part as I don't have a clue.

I am not sure though if I personally would want my return coming out a one section sump that contained sand. Again I am sure there is a way to do it, but I have not done research for a sump like that..

Again Good Luck..
