just take a 5 gal bucket fill with water, test initial PH GH and KH put 1 rock in, preferably with some movement (air stone would work), wait a few days and test again. compare results. Honestly, I've never really played with GH and KH, but am starting to read up on it since the wife wants shellies. And I still feel bad for being an arse hat

The river rocks I find for my tank are always soaked in bleach and water for a while and rinsed before they hit my tank. IMO you should spend the $4 for a gallon of vinegar before putting the rocks in your tank. It could save you some heartache. I even pour the vinegar back in the bottle for subsequent tests, as long as I don't get any bubbles from the test.
