BTW now I'm back to trying to figure out a shopping list. Do I now need a skimmer (29 gal)? If so is it necesary to have a skimmer, a power head, AND a filter?

If you have enough live rock (1-2#s per gallon) you can do without the mechanical filter. You will need powerheads however. You want to get 10x turnover for a FOWLR or FO and 25x for a reef. Those are minimum numbers to shoot for. The skimmer is optional. I'm curious about the new nano skimmers that EuroReef is putting out this February. If it were me I'd wait for their release to get one.

Definitely the Koralia for the powerheads. On the skimmer I'd look at both the Euroreef when it comes out and if you don't want to wait (although no reason not to) the Tunze nano.

For the flow you want 29x10 minimum for FOWLR and 29x25 minium for reef

The UV I'd save for your QT tank as it will also get rid of good bacteria as well.

Please don't be irritated with me, but I don't know what you mean by "29x25". (reef tank) The website only shows gph:

so which one is right? thanks!!!

gph is how many gallons per hour the powerhead will turnover. If you have a FOWLR or FO you want a minimum of 10 gph to be turned over in your tank.

29 (your tank volume) x 10 (turnover rate) = 290 gph turnover minimum for FOWLR/FO
29 (your tank volume) x 25 (turnover rate) = 725 gph turnover minimum for Reef

It is better to go with 2 powerheads than one in many cases because it aids in getting a good chaotic flow. It is also better in my opinion to go over the minimum amount than under it in most cases.
