I really don't think ammonia is your problem. Because the filters were running the whole time, the biological filtration would be taking care of the ammonia and nitrites.
Not with the pH at 4.5 they wouldn't. It'd be doing bugger all.

Yeah, but PH got settled yesterday afternoon. Perhaps teh shift was just too dramatic?

as primary treatment you can always use some non-iodized salt . It will help in both the cases of bacterial / fungal infections .and it will also help the diseased fish to swim easily as the normal water density sometimes seems to become a problem for seek fishes

it's not a way of total cure....but it can always help in primary stages
