They look like root borers to me.
We have these in oregon too.
Giant Root Borer - Prionus californicus (might be a different species)

speaking of bugs...

yesterday the biggest wasp i'd ever seen in my whole life flew into my house!!!!:eek3:

i swear it was at least 3" from head to tail...

used my big fish net to get that thing out...

... i think it was the devil...:devil:

I don;t think we have very many beetles as big as those borers get in north america. I bet (a little) money that those are borers There are many different kinds to! check out: http://www.whatsthatbug.com/
