I know you cannot trust everything some LFS workers might tell you, but you should be able to ask about where they get the fish. There are also many small breeders that will sell directly to the public. So, if you want a fish that is sometimes taken from the wild, in a way you do not approve of, you may still be able to find a reliable source.

I take two things back.

They have gold variant cardinal tetras now, which are obviously tank-raised and no more expensive than regular cardinals, so commercial cardinal tetra raising has to be more common and cost-feasible than previously.

I also see some people claiming to have bred glass catfish (if only accidentally).

i think they started breeding dwarf puffers and glass catfishes
Ditto odessa barbs, ornate bichirs, banded leporinus, and leopard ctenopoma.
