wataugachicken: if i put them in a container like that will i not just have them same problem with the water or is it just lack of space that is making them miserable??
how long does filtering a tank take for it to be ready for my fish
With a larger tank you'll still have the same problem only it won't be as bad because there's more water to dilute the toxins the fish are giving off (ammonia). They will also be more happy with the extra space but that's not the main concern right now.

It takes at least four weeks to cycle a tank. So if you don't take them back just put the fish in your bigger tank and cycle it with them for the four weeks, maybe five.

 im not looking for someone to just tell me to take my fish back i want advice to help me make them as happy as possible as i want to start a proper aquarium.
Either go out and get them a 55 gallon aquarium today or take them back. These are the two options you have to keep them alive. I'm not sure but I doubt dead fish will be happy.

we are giving you the best advise take the fish back. Then buy a big enough home for them. at least 30-40 gallons. You need filteration with goldfish they are waste makers and need filteration. A tank can take a month or so to cycle and be ready to house fish properly. Take my advise if you keep those fish in that bowl they will die from ammonia poisioning in days. If they do somehow make it there will be problems with growth and color and development and they will be prone to desease for the rest of their poor lives.

thanks for the constructive help i really hope someone gave you such help when you started out with your fish. it isn't the first fish i have had i've had one before in a bowl and it lived for around 7 years i am just worried about these as they dont seem happy and wanted some help not just un-useful comments
Please research your fish before you buy them sorry if you dont want to take advise from responsible experienced fish keepers. If you want to keep a fish in a bowl buy a beta they do ok in a bowl.

so they can live in the tank while it cycles and it wont harm them. i think i have a larger tank that my friend used to have with filters and everything so i could get that and once the water ahs been treated i can just put them straight in??

Yes, frequent water changes in the meantime will help your fish. Only do maybe half the bowl at a time. Match the temperature closely.

Four litres is about one gallon so a 55-gallon would be about 220 litres roughly. I'm not sure you need one quite that large though, depends if you want to add more fish after it's cycled. Maybe 180 or 200 litres. Also buy a canister filter too. Those are the filters than go below the tank and have two tubes going up.

i am trying to take advice about my fish but would prefer advice like other people are giving which gives contructive ways to just help my fish. the way i see it i am trying to make it so they are happy if i take them back there is a chance they could get bought by someone who wont try to make things better for them.
have been researching all night to find things to make sure they are healthy

They can live in a tank while cycling just make sure you have a test kit that tests for ammonia nitrite and nitrate these are important while cycling. here is some info on cycling Please read.

personally I would get the master test kit it is perfect for starting up a new tank. Bio wheel filters are also a great choice for goldfish because they put a good amount of oxygenated water back in to the tank. Prime is a good water conditioner especially in a cycling tank as it detoxifies/removes ammonia nitrate and nitrite I hope that helps start you off.
