Tapping on the glass

i tap the brim of my tanks if i'm feeding straight out of a container to shimmy in the flakes. without there even being food, the fishes start sucking water as if there were. they don't seem too mad about being fed.

My dwarf puffers come for feeding when I tap the glass. I don't do this for my other tanks, and would prefer nobody else tap on any of my aquariums.

The stress factor probably varies by fish and case. Some fish are naturally timid. Some fish might not be used to noises and interference. New inhabitants will probably become unnerved by the tapping, but you can probably condition any fish to get used to it.

I still think it's rude when people tap the glass of aquariums they don't own. I want to kick people tapping the glass in public aquariums, and I want to strangle anyone I catch tapping my tanks.

i think its just obnoxious to tap on the glass repeatedly.. i dont think the fish care.. although i'd assume that if they had do deal with it all day every day, they would think it was obnoxious too. it's one thing if it's as classical conditioning (tap on the glass to get a conditioned response, like to get the fish to come eat) but when it's just to be obnoxious,it makes me want to scream.
my sister used to tap on the glass at fish stores to get the attention of the goldfish she liked. i told her if she did it again i'd kick her in the face.

she stopped. 8)

i should also mention that my fish come to eat food when i open the lid of the tank. it doesn't make a noise, its not obnoxious, and they figured it out anyway... like magic.

lol strong words.. remind me not to go to a fish store with you

i just open the lid of the fish tank and they swim up to the surface.

the reason fish jump when you tap on the glass is a sensory overload. their lateral line allows them to detect movements in the water, and when there is a sparatic burst of energy in the water it scares them, etc. and can stress them out.
