Tapping on the glass

Any time I get near the tank the fish come for food. The only time I tap is when I see one fish harassing another and I want to break it up--maybe not the best thing to do but they can't hear me when I scold them!

i think its just obnoxious to tap on the glass repeatedly.. i dont think the fish care.. although i'd assume that if they had do deal with it all day every day, they would think it was obnoxious too. it's one thing if it's as classical conditioning (tap on the glass to get a conditioned response, like to get the fish to come eat) but when it's just to be obnoxious,it makes me want to scream.
my sister used to tap on the glass at fish stores to get the attention of the goldfish she liked. i told her if she did it again i'd kick her in the face.

she stopped. 8)

i should also mention that my fish come to eat food when i open the lid of the tank. it doesn't make a noise, its not obnoxious, and they figured it out anyway... like magic.

Her boyfriend, the psyc major..... me.... taps on the glass to get his fish to come to the right front corner to receive their treats! I have never been threatened with a kick in the face!!!!! :D

lmao the only time i've ever kicked someone out of my store was because they were tapping on the glass...every single glass...the kid was banging on the parakeet cages, the finch cages, the guinea pig cages, so i told him and his mother not to tap the glass because it scares the animals and hurts them. went to do some paperwork and our dog trainer came in angry beyond belief. apparently the kid had walked over to our cat adoption center and was banging on the glass there, then started banging on the glass in the training area. so i went and told him/mom in an angry (yet polite) manner, if they tap on the glass one more time i would have to ask them to leave...not 2 minutes later the mom starts tapping on the glass on my aquariums...sigh...

i think if its a little tap its ok, its when the ppl are tapping on tanks with very skittish fish or tapping hard just to get a reaction that it really becomes an issue

i use the masonic ring i wear on my right hand to lightly tap the glass, and the fish come right to me....then the oscars try to bite me.... a lot.... Maybe it does bother them.....

My fish learned the open lid thing too. As soon as I open the lid on any of my aquariums, all of the fish shoot straight up to the surface expecting to be fed.

with a 250 gallon tank, the fish dont notice lid opening as much....

I never tap the glass. I see no point in it. I just go near my tanks and the fish know they are going to be fed or they will be cowering in the corner because I am rescaping. My betta is going to get his fins or head cut off one day because he is always around when I am pruning the plants.

I don't tap the glass and never will. Tapping sometimes stresses the fish and the stress alone can render them vulnerable to most diseases as their immune system is severely weakened.
