New 55g. Malawi- Progression thread

I'm not a big fan of African cichlids, but the auratus (if I used the right name -- the bright yellow ones) are gorgeous.

The bright yellow ones are the yellow labs. Auratus are yellow with black stripes on the top half of their body

In that case, I like both quite a bit.

Females and juvies are yellow with black stripes, and mature males are black with yellow stipes.

I suggest to remove the plants and the driftwood and add more slate. It will look more natural and your fish will enjoy it more.

Thanks but....#1. I like the driftwood whether its natural or not, it hasn't seemed to play around with the pH much and the fish do enjoy it, they swim around it and under it so its going to stay, thanks anyway. #2. I wanted something other then just slate and wood to fill it in a bit thats why the plants are in there, and it gives the fish more cover too. Like I said in about 4 previous posts, I can't get anymore slate for atleast 4 months, otherwise I would. The pieces I've got now i didn't have to pay for sooo i'm not complaining and I can wait for a while. The fish seem fine, theres lots of hidey holes for everyone to go not to mention being able to hind in/behind the plants and driftwood.

Nice so far! I've become hooked on my Cichlids too. Look at the 100 gal link in my sig. Mine seem to love the plants and rocks, and driftwood. I'm ordering more driftwood and going to be adding slate. May I ask what plants those are in the right side of the tank pictured? Is that tank the Walmart 55? I had bought the same, or one like it after hours one night due to my jewels spawning. That stock filter sucked for me. I only had 3 fish in the tank and it was building up like crazy. I went ahead and threw in a Emperor 400 for s&g's. Night and day difference.

Thanks! Those plants are just fake but I know the one more towards the front is supposed to look like a sword of some kind and the other one behind it is just a group of a bunch of different fake plants haha. And yes it is a walmart tank...our wal-mart has good stock suprisingly, compared to the complaints and stories of other members wal marts around them. I quite like the wal-mart here and since we only have 3 LFS here (one of which is dirty and always ich bound), I tend to get a lot of fish from Wal Mart and they've all (or mostly all) done really well for me! I'm actually going to get a Kenyi from there tomorrow probably! So far the filter is doing a good job I think...theres 6-2.5 to 3 inch fish so far and no probems yet. I do have another filter lined up to go onto it eventually so I think that will be good enough for filtration.

Edit: Your 100g. looks nice! Are those live plants? If yes what kind of plants are they and have your fish not destroyed them? I would like to do a planted tank but i'm not sure what kind of plants to use...i've heard Java Vern and something else might work.
