DIY Frozen Fish Food

haha, I love these DIY foods. When I finally get a giant tank this stuff will be their staple.....

Does this stuff sink or float? I am thinking of doing a home food recipe for my various Synodontis. They like it a little more meaty (they like liver) and mixing it with plain pellet food doesn't work so well because the juices just stream off and make a mess :( I'd imagine the gelatine would keep it all together until the fish get to it and gobble it up :)

What you reckon?

It sinks very slowly depending on how long you let it thaw first. It reaches the bottom intact. I haven't seen how long it takes to disintegrate though coz it turns the average guppy into a raging piranha and doesn't last longer than a minute! lol

Gelatine would probably take about 20 minutes to dissolve at tropical temperatures so I guess it might work with liver. I've had feedback from others who have tried octopus and beef heart instead of the shrimp - same result - piranha like behavior! :grinyes:

This probably belongs in the DIY forums but which one? FW? SW?

Stumbled across a recipe for DIY fish food and decided to add a few extra ingredients and give it a go...

Preparation: Slice and dice some frozen peas, cucumber, baby marrow, garlic, shrimp and broccoli. Add some pure spirulina powder. Chuck the foul smelling green goo into a pot of boiling water and gelatine and stir plenty. Whilst holding your nose, pour green goo into flat tupperware containers and refrigerate until set. Cut into little blocks and freeze.

Application: Thaw blocks about an hour before feeding time

Result: Feeding frenzy! The fish absolutely love it! :)

This is a pretty sweet reciepe here is what I was thinking about:

add shrimp, squid, scallops, and smelt as the protien
add peas, nori, and broccoli
get some good vitamins and garlic

hopefully it will work. I am going to make very small quanities because of how small my fish are. I want to make enough to fill a sandwich bag about 1 cm thick. Maybe 4oz?

Hey Guys,

I just thought I would let you know about the recipe I used. I got it from another Synodontis breeder in South Africa. I didn't use all the ingredients that he suggested but here goes ...

140g Sinking Trout Starter Pellets (I use this as my base food as it is cheap and high in protein and all the other good basics).
120g Binder (instead of gelatine I used sodiumcarboxymethylcellulose. Available at chemical supply stores. Inert and doesn't need to be heated so wont destroy any goodness)

15g Chicken Liver
15ml Cod Liver Oil
1g Vit C
1 Egg Yellow
400ml Soy Milk
4g Lectithin (soy protein)
1 multivitamin tablet

Blend everything except the first 2 ingredients for about 2 min or untill there are no chunky bits left. Then add to the first 2 ingredients (dry) and mix well. Also add about 100ml of water.

I then took this horrid smelling stuff and put it all in a ziploc bag and got most of the air out. While in the bag I squished it into a nice flat sheet and dumped it in the freezer. I can now break off shards of it to feed to my fishies and they love it!

Next time I am going to add some Nori or Spirulina for a little green and then also maybe some shrimp heads or squid as well.

Feed them my normal pellets in the mornin and during the day and in the evening I give them this super food!
