I'm tired of my filter. It doesn't seem to have enough power. I have an Emperor 400 and since I added the plants, I don't think it's doing the job.

Any suggestions for my 55 gallon planted tank? Canister?

A canister is a good way to go!...Casecade, or Fluval, Marineland C-series,Eheim and Rena filstar...all great products! its a preference thing!

The Emperor filters have enough output to handle a 55. The problem is that they require regular cleanings. They come apart rather easily and you can clean the accumulating gunk off the impeller. This gunk is usually what cuts down their flow. A really thorough cleaning once a month takes about 10 minutes ince you get familiar with it. If you have mineral accumulations on any parts, fill the filter (away from the tank) with warm water and distilled white vinegar (about 50% each) and let it run to circulate the mix for 15 minutes or so. That loosens it up and it can be removed. The impellers are also replaceable so I always recommend keeping one on hand.

I should add I do maintenance on my filter and do weekly water changes. It's just too much waste from the plants. I'm constantly unclogging the baskets.

Marineland "C" Series 360

You can try a sponge over the intake. Debris will still get stuck on it but it doesn.t stop the flow as much. I use an Aqua Clear filter sponge.

I have an AC 70 & a rena XP on my 55.

Sounds like a plant maintaining issue vice a filter issue
