ok all along my jack dempsey has been getting punked by my slightly bigger oscar even afraid to eat sometimes but the last couple of days he has been getting more aggressive. well i woke up this morning in shock to find him chasing the oscar around when i got a closer look i saw the oscar was missing big chunks out of his fins. now he has been gradually getting some white spots which im guessing is ich but he has also always had small pin prick holes in his dorsal fins.but this damage must be caused by the dempsey right?is there anyway fin rot would go from a couple small holes to this in one night?

This is oscar the grouch

please tell me what you think?

The tears in his fins are from the dempsey's attacks. Are they still being kept together? If they are, seperate them immediately. Two fish like that can't be kept together, and it isn't reccomended anyway.

What are the other fish being kept with them (besides the gouramis, which also can't be kept with an oscar)?

just 2 giant danios and a pleco but the oscar and dempsey are only supposed to be in there temporary i just thought i had more time before aggression increased.the dempsey was very peacful and never bothered anyone until a cuple days ago.in fact he used to be afraid of the oscar and wouldnt even go to the top and eat he would eat the falling food or off the ground.is it normal for him to suddenly change like that or is there something wrong with him most people say that the dempsey stays curios when young rather than violent, until there older.did he just get tired of not getting enough food or being bullied?

is my oscar in pain or are fins just like hair to humans?will they grow back?
Fins will grow back depending on the damage done. Separate the aggressor and do plenty of water changes until the fins grow back.

scientists have done extensive studies as to fish feeling any pain at all ( brought on by anti-fishing tree huggers lol ) ,and thre is sufficent evisence to say, fish do not feel "pain",discomfort, but not pain... id still seperate the oscar to his own tank,or at least away from the "jack the ripper"..

i wish i could seperate them but for now i only have the one tank and the best i could do is get a divider but with the tank already slightly overstocked it would limit the other fish 2 even less space. they havent been having many problems today which is why im wondering how he could do so much damage in one night out of know where. he just doesnt want anyone near him other than that he doesnt go looking for trouble he just chases them when they get 2 close.and i also dont understand how in one night the oscar whent from being king of the tank to hiding in a corner and didnt even put a scratch on the dempsey.fighting for alpha male i guess or just tired of being bullied for dinner rights?
