can i keep a convict with a pair of jewels?

i would say it depends on how big the tank is. if it is a solitary convict, i would say probably okay as long as there is adequate room for a jewel pair to defend their nest... as they -will- do this quite heavily. two pairs together would be quite difficult unless you have quite a large tank.

bear in mind, jewel cichlids are african, while convicts are central american, and it is generally not recommended to mix the two.

Sorry i read the original question wrong.

But you could keep a single convict and a single jewel in the same tank?
Yes provided the tank has large flooring area for them to establish boundaries. Both are rather able to defend against each other but not at spawning time.

yeah one of each given a big tank subject to lots of variables including personality...a pair of each I think would be carnage; could not choose, pound for pound, more aggressive pairs when spawning.
