Stand Question??

I'm going to build a stand for my 45 gallon tank. I have been doing alot of looking around on the web and different forums and have some really cool ideas. The question I have, does everyone put some type of foam or styrofoam under the tank to make sure it gets full contact across the bottom of the tank? When you buya premade stand at a LFS or anywhere else, there isn't anything like that built into it. I have a 144 gallon Oceanic and the stand for it didn't have anything like it under it. They're suppose to be one of the best from my understanding. :confused:
 
I had this same question and to go with it... if you do put some sort of foam under it EXACTLY what kind? And if water runs spills and gets in it, would it absorb it/eventually mildew?
 
I have never put styrofoam under my tanks. It doesnt seem necessary in my opinion.
 
It's a matter of preference. I think it has to do with distributing stress/pressure at different points of the tank. One constant pressure T/O. Typically you use pink or blue hard foam insulation under the tank. The water doesn't bother it. It's water proof people put it there basements when insulating.

I live in SW Florida, we don't have basements so I really don't know what kind of foam you are refering to. Thanks for the replies so far.
 
from what ive read you only need the foam if your floor or stand is not level. so if you build you stand level no need for the foam. jmo by the way.

Being out of level is not the problem. When the stand is out of plane (a twist in it) then it can stress the joints in the tank to a point where they can fail. I use white styrofoam and not the blue stuff because it compresses easier and it is cheaper. It makes up for any twist that may occur in the stand.

What size styrofoam do you use??
