durso standpipe

yesterday i diyed a durso standpipe and i cant seem to get it working properly. i have a 1" bulkhead and starting from teh bottom i have a 5" length of 1" pvc, 1" x 1 1/4" bushing, 1 1/4" T, 1" 90 off the side, 1 1/4" x 1/2" bushing, short piece of 1/2", 1/2" ball valve to adjust the air flow. no matter how i adjust the air flow the darn thing still gurgles like crazy. the water level in my overflow doesnt seem to wanna stay constant either, it keeps fluctuating up and down. what am i doing wrong????

seems to me you should have a snall piece of the 1 inch pvc sticking out of the bulkhead, with the coupler closer to the bottom...
your 5 inch peice should be 1 1/4, as should be everything from there up.
if you wanted to use the 1/2 reducer at the top to controll airflow, i dont see what it would hurt, but everything between the bulkhead and vent should be 1 1/4....
i just made 4 of these, but havent tried em out yet...so im just going by the info on durso's web page....hope it helps
 
i actually just whipped up a stockton standpipe and it seems to be working out quite well. its much more compact in my hob overflow than the durso was. yeah i suppose perhaps that 5" piece of 1" was the problem but no biggie, the stockton seems to be the way to go for me now
 
yeah so apparently i was wrong. the SS i built doesnt seem to wanna work that well either. tomorrow i shall try the gurgle buster. hopefully that'll solve my problems. thanks for the link reefscape :drool:
 
so ive been messing around with this gurgle buster for almost 3 hours now and im about fed up. nothing i do stops the gurgling. its really f'in annoying. its not as bad as it was how it used to gurgle non stop but now its doing it every 20 seconds or so at its longest. i cant stand this anymore. i guess im doomed to have my tank noisy as all heck rnt i?
