I've been looking at new tanks online and every site i look at has coffee table aquariums for sale. It got me wondering how many people here have these type of aquariums.

I was always under the assumption that tanks had to be supported on all four sides but iv'e just found this, how does this work?

i have read articles about the cruelty aspects of a coffee table aquarium. the banging from cups/glasses/kids etc will constantly spook your fish, also as its in a sitting room then you get the busy walkway placement warning coming to mind, for me at least.
no matter how soft you think your putting it down the water amplifies the sound waves for the fish. hence why when setting up a normal tank they say not to put it in a busy walkway, ie front door passage etc. it was enough to stop me buying one.
look around for articles and advice and decide for your self though. they are just not my bag.

The weight of the tank is supported by the under structure (the smaller boxed structure contacting the floor) and the weight is distributed through that boxed structure.
The ends, and corners are cantilevered requiring no support as the loads of the overhanging structure are minimal.
Many homes are built this way.

Water changes would be a pain, trying to siphon water into a bucket which are both sitting on the floor. And also the viewing angle would be horrible unless you get a "table" large enough to house fish that are more of a pond type fish like koi's or comets.

I agree. My uncle had one in the 70's - 80's and I thought it was the coolest thing. But all that banging from a house full of kids and guests? Nope.
I confess, I've thought of buying one before, but never have for a lot of the reasons listed here. Plus, I don't have space in my current residence for anything like that.
