How do you make your footprint lighter?

so what they have the money to leave every electrical item in there house on 24 hours a day and they eat nothing but a can of beans every week?

I don't think it matters either way, kinda like some people think that smoking cigarettes is lower class thing to do, but yet prices keep going up and people are still buying them for 7-10 dollars a pack here in Chicago.

I think people who are not "considered" wealthy financially (can't afford the 40mpg hybrid or the solar panels, new energy efficient appliances, donations), as well as "famous" celebrities (who want to use their star status (Bono) and/or want to cast a light upon themselves to move out of the B list (Bon Jovi)) tend to be more vocal about the world's woes (environment, disease, hunger...etc).

While those who do care and can afford the home and vehicle green items do so without screaming, yelling, and advertising.

While there are others, myself and others here, who don't buy into the media frenzy and propaganda. Some of us are people who own nice cars, homes, and have MTS. And others have a small 10g tank and live paycheck to paycheck.

And, Greenpeace the next time I walk by the Clark and Belmont intersection, I still won't have a minute for the environment, I need my latte.

it seems like the people with lots of money don't believe in climate change, and the main middle people or below feel passionatley about it. sorry if this sounds stereotypical but it's just what i've noticed.

You are more confused than I originally thought. :grinyes:

you can go green without a fancy vehicle, walk or run to stores when doing your arrends.

how rich would you have to be to keep up with the price of gas?

Heh, I live 5 miles from the nearest store. I wonder how many bike trips I'd need to make to get groceries for 5 people.

We are the richest country in the world,so I'm told (where is my share?), and have some of the lowest prices in the world. If other countries can live with gas prices at 7-8 dollars per gallon I'm sure we can also. Besides the higher the gas prices the less we'll drive and the less pollution there will be. So you should be praying for $10 a gallon to save the environment lol.

Even if the movie I watched, The Day After Tomorrow, was true it couldn't happen as fast as they showed. Coastal people would have time to move inland.Northern people would have time to migrate south.

The biggest problem I see with Global Climate Change, which is what it really is, would be the problems with migration. In the past there weren't borders and you could move where you wanted. These days it would be difficult to relocate millions of people to other countries without fanfare.

of course the day after tomorrow was exageratingly fast, it was to build a plot for the movie. that could happen but not THAT fast.

i guess your right about the gas prices there.

Again, this is the wrong time in global cycle for the earth to be warming. It is supposed to be cooling right now.

For the skeptics, from Yale:

A good collection of the official data from Columbia:
http://www.columbia.edu/~jeh1/

It's not just about the sea rising, there has been a rise in extreme climate based events(the cat 5 hurricanes, anyone). Other consequences of the climate change are mass extinction and mass crop failure. Really, migration isn't that much of a problem besides the devastation to many economic infrastructures. Manhattan, for example, would not be livable. Contrary to popular opinion, the earth will not compensate for us-it's very sensitive in the long term to these things, which will knock us out of equilibrium. Maybe it doesn't matter much on a long term timescale, but that is sort of a nihilistic point of view that should be a moot point.

I don't know, I really don't like a lot of environmental groups. They've associated these things with a lifestyle, being trendy and extremist. I think it's easier for a lot of people to believe that it is media hype, especially after all of the things the media has hyped-and in some cases, it is, yet they leave important cases and facts alone. They just aren't dependable for scientific accuracy. I just don't go to regular news sources for scientific information anymore.
Btw, for those who like skepticism, check out the skeptical inquirer.
I do think that the way to go would be to strike a balance between naturalism and profit, and that it can be done. I'm also not ready to give myself over to pessimism yet.

anyone think that it's supposed to be cooling but we're making it changing?

i have noticed the part about celebrity's going green to convince people, it's just like having spiderman on a pepsi commercial, it makes them want to do it or have it.

really an oppinion can be based avaliable, reliable knoledge and not always the media.

sorry if this is off topic but since we've been debating on climate change can we also debate about things like the orgin of life, socks inside or out or favorite brand of hotdogs?
