HUGE STORE CHAIN AND THEIR FISH

For real send the pics in an email to the corporate office you can get the address from their site. It worked for me, won't hurt to try.

:werd: I know a lot of their other stores have stopped the actual sale of fish whether it was due to lack of sales or deplorable conditions the inhabitants were kept in I dont know, but a e-mail to their corporate office letting them know how their fishes are being kept and presented in that location will get their attention to hopefully change their actions. Good luck with it and keep us updated on what the response is.

What to do about these conditions:

1). If you can, take pictures. They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Don't be obscene and obnoxious about it.

2). Notify IN WRITING the parent headquarters along with your pictures stating date, time, store number (if known). State and City. Some places have several stores in a single town and that is why a store number can help.

3). Notify the governing agency with the same things as outlined in #2. It may be Animal Control, Health Dept, Fish and Game, etc.different states have different governing authorities. These same agencies also control the Mom & Pop.

4) Do NOT challenge the store employees or manager. If they cared, this would not have happened in the first place. You will also likely be arrested for disturbing the peace or some other trumped up (yet legal) charge (i.e. trespassing).

5). Don't do NOTHING. Make yourself heard if you truly do care and take action, whether it works or not is beyond your control. Recognize that at least you tried.

6). Don't complain if you don't want to get involved.

I am glad that 95% of the people on this forum do care enough to take action. For all those that do - Thanks for standing up!

I don't work for wally world but I do work for a huge pet store chain and I work in the fish department I am currently the only surviving member as everyone else has been fired. companies that are huge don't care about the quality of the living environments for the pets for the most part all they are worried about is the price tag they can put on them trust me when funds at the store have come to tough times MY department felt it first I have actually run out of fish food before to feed the fish and its hard to give them a decent living habitat when my hours were cut so horribly I went from 40 to 8 hours a week! . . . so enough of my ramble . . . but the reason I feel a fish department is always gunna be the worse in a huge department store is because owners can deal with paying a couple dollars and have the fish die than to have lets say a TV stolen or something like that so its the last thing on there mind and are willing to cut the loses (unfortanately it is always gunna be the price tag)

You can't throw every Walley World store into one category. I do agree that in general their fish are horrible. However, there are the rare occasions when a store has a Dept. Manager over pets who cares. Who takes the time to educate themselves on the fish and keeps the tanks up to par.

My experience: When my wife and I got our first tank, we promised ourselves that we would NEVER buy fish from W-M. Their prices literally can't be beat. After, being ripped off by a major pet chain, W-M prices started to get pretty tempting. There are 8 W-M's within 35 miles of us. 6 sell fish. We Started noticing that 1 in particular really kept their tanks and fish in great condition. The other 5 looked very similar to the pics posted in this thread. We broke our promise to ourselves and bought fish from that one store. NEVER had any die to date. All are very healthy and at a fraction of the price we would have paid from a major LFS.

EDIT
FYI- I am not trying to defend Wal-Mart. I am just stating facts as i see them. In truth I hate Wal-Mart and prefer Kmart and Target for general merchandise. However, I find myself (seemingly) forced to shop there for lack of options. The closest to us Wal-mart is 9 miles. The one we frequent is 18 miles, the nearest Kmart and Target is 35 miles in a town we don't care to frequently go to.

I actually got my local store of the same name to stop selling fish. I called and emailed the corporate office as well as complained to the Mgr. After about 4 emails with pics they stopped selling the fish. ONE PERSON CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

And you think they quit selling fish all because you sent them some emails???

I don't think it is Wally World. They use gravel on the bottom of their aquariums. At least all do that I have been in.

Looks like WM tanks to me. All the WM that sell fish that I have ever seen is bare bottom. Why wouldn't they be for a world wide retailer? Substrate would just be more costly and make the take much more difficult to clean and maintain. Especially since the majority of the employees that they have maintaining the fish tanks have no clue about fish anyway.

One more thing. If you're going to be contacting Wal-Mart about their fish to ask the to change something, how about asking them to change this while your at it.

This is a pic I took the other day. If you could just get them to change the first line I'd appreciate it. I'm sure that if you bring it to their attention that the 10" max size is an absolute lie, they'll change it immediately. If one person can get them to completely stop selling fish at a store with a phone call and a few emails, I'm sure they'll get right on this once you let them know.
It's probably just a misprint right?

Thanks

It would seem that you think this post is a joke.
