My 45 Gallon Heavily Planted - 8 Weeks In - Seriously!

Thanks Vader.

I've got the green light from the Mrs. on the MegaTank 150 (lol). It's definitely going to be planted. Right now trying to visualize the mixture of driftwood, plants, etc. Getting a good feel for what grows to what proportions in my 45 gallon.

Family vacation in mid-October. Had hoped to start setup shortly after that, but it may be after January 1.

Before getting started I will post a thread asking for suggestions - all the way from the stand to filters to lighting to plant and stock suggestions. Should be kind of fun to see the different opinions I receive. An overall build thread from start to finish is the plan!

We'll all be subscribing to that thread when it materializes :D Hopefully, Santa is an aquarium fan.

How long is the vacation and what are you planning to do about tank maintenance/feeding in your absence? Since I set up these more sophisticated tanks in the new house, I have not taken an extended vacation and am not sure how I will react to leaving them unattended for an extended period LOL. Even with the solenoid and the pH controller the 'what ifs' of the CO2 injection still scare me...

That is truly outstanding! I have major tank envy!

Santa is a big aquarium fan - the Mrs. already told me so (lol)!

We are going to Disney Land for a week.

As far as maintenance and feeding go - no feeding (they can easily go a week without food) and no daily ferts. Basically I will do a big water change just before we leave and stop the daily ferts while we are gone.

Lights and Co2 are on a timer - 5 hours on, 2 hours off, and 5 more on - 7 days a week. I will just leave that schedule running while we are gone.

A "little" worried about a Co2 blast - not a lot I can do about that. I could, I guess, refill my tank before I go to make sure I don't get the bottom dump out (not sure about that yet).

Also, a little more worried about the filters going crazy and draining the tank / flooding the house. Again, not much I can do about that either. I guess I will keep my fingers crossed and hope for the best. Pretty sure that all will be fine.

The fish should be ready to eat and the tank should be ready for a trim when we return (lol)!!

You and I are both clearly card-carrying members of the "Hope for the Best" tank club... skipping the feeding and ferts are the easy part. CO2 hijinks and filter madness on my 90 + 125 gallons = sleepless nights :D

At least you've got that tile (don't you?) - mine is all carpet and sofa. The filter goes nuts and siphons the tank on to the carpet and I go to the sofa (lol). We both will definitely be keeping our fingers crossed! I guess it's just part of the fun.

MegaTank

I was just looking at tank size (footprint). The 120 makes a little more sense than the 150 (maybe) because you can stick with the 48" lights instead of the 72". But on the other hand - maybe it's better to spread the current / circulation over a longer tank. Any thoughts?
