bubbles on rock

First things first. Your salinity would be barely ok for just fish, and it is barely supporting your rock and sand! With coral and inverts this is not ok. I would get it up to 1.023. Do not do this all at once!!!!! Raise your salinity by .02/week until you get it there! This will help!

Honestly, Something is wrong!!! This kind of algae would not be growing if all that were true!!! I am not calling you a liar, just to make that clear, however something you are using is off! One of the tests are bad, or something. If you had 0's across the board like that the algae would starve to death. Also how is your tank set up, how are your powerheads positioned? How is your rock work laid out? Is the water from the lfs ro or ro/di? How much live rock? How is the canister set up internally? Filter pads & Media?

Hang in there! We will get to the bottom of this!

Hi Brackeeper,
I appreciate your advice and will keep on trying untill i have sorted it out.
My salt is down and i am taking steps to increse it as your advice.
My ammonia is now showing about 0.3 if this is correct.
Phosphate 0 , Nitrate is lessthan 5 but has a slight shade of pink to it, Nitrite is 0 , Ph is 8.1 , kh is 8.3.

My water is from the lfs and i buy RO for top up and RO salt mix which is ready made salt water. I think i topped up with too much ro which is why my salt level was down.
Pics to follow and hopefully you can see how i have my tank setup and the equipment i have.

Cheers,
Lee.

What is your calcium at, the cyno and hair could be taking up the trates and phosphates as quick as they are produced. I would remove all sponges in any filters you have and run JUST carbon or GFO and change it weekly, get your flow up to about 30-50 times your volume and use a turkey baster and suck out as much of the cyno as you can

Can anyone tell me what the coral is called and also what this green stuff is that is growing?
The green thing has grown from the live rock. Should it be removed or not?

I have a protein skimmer on the left (grey pump and return filter), 2 hydor korilia 1 powerheads and an external canister filter with the feed pipe on the left.
The big powerhead on the right is coming out of the tank because it is too powerfull (5000lph) and the coral curls up into a ball when its on even though its not pointing at it.

I dont yet have a calcium test kit, I have only bought the external filter last weekend, is this really going to affect things this soon??
I try and keep on top of this cyno or whatever it is because it chokes my corals if im not carefull.

What is GFO (excuse my ignorance)

The green algea looks like Halimeda and that algea tends to suck up calcium the Coral looks like a long tenticle plate coral but would need to see the base, can you describe the base, branching or semi flat???

The coral was on a rock when i bought it. It looks like a tree.. it has a trunk and then the tentacles, but its on a rock. Between the tentacles it seems to have a sort of mouth like an enemone.

Your canister filter is just going to cause more problems than they are worht IMO so why let it get started and yes I have seen hair and cyno take off rather quickly when running HOB or Cannister filters. I would try to change position on your 5000ltr pump and keep it in as it will help with the hair and cyno. GFO is Granular Ferric Oxide http://www.gettankedaquariums.com/i...r.File/GFO.Phosphate.Remover.Main.Page....htm

Thanks Archer, would it be any benefit to run the canister without sponges but with media in it?

I have googled this algae (Halimeda) and can confirm that is what i have.
Its about the size of your hand if you spread your fingers.
Do i need to remove this?

I did see somewhere that the more flow the better, but the coral really closed up into a tight ball...its not done that before so i turned the powerhead off. after about 1/2 hr the coral came back out and is now as it usually is.
I put the powerhead in yesterday evening.
