I was at my Mother-in-laws and went to use the internet on her computer and heard the dial up go when when I went to login.

So I was just wondering who would still subject themselfs to dial up when dsl or highspeed are so readily available. She says it is just for checking her email and doesn't need anything faster. But, really dial-up, for just dollars more she could at least get the lower end dsl and speed up her time by at least 10 times her current rate.

my grandmother and mother...both live in different small towns where high speed is 40+ a month and dialup's 10. They just do the email thing too. I just use my iPhone when I visit...even without a wifi connection it's faster :P

The US is far behind Europe and other places when it comes to internet services. Europeans have better and cheaper service than what you will find here. Analog (dial-up) has higher maintenance overhead and digital is cheaper and easier to maintain.

My parents have dial up. It saves money. I may go back to dial up too again for the same reason later on.

As others have said for people who live in the country or near wilderness, sometimes it's the only internet option. Being in town/urban areas may not realize this sometimes.

A big drawback is many people online have no empathy for dial up users and most everything is setup for faster internet services. Some of these people don't realize how much their thread/ webpage etc will lag for someone on dial up.
I wish there was more consideration for them.

I still have dial-up...believe it or not, its all that is available in my little part of rural PA.

Wow, really?! I live in rural Vermont, and neither DSL nor Broadband are available here. I don't think I could deal with using dial-up though (I know, I'm spoiled by having super high-speed internet in my dorm room @ college from 2001-2006), I think I probably would have smashed my computer out of impatience waiting for some page to load LOL. I have satellite internet - the equipment and set-up costs were a bit pricey, but my monthly bill is about equivalent to DSL, and it's just as fast.

I am also in Jinkz position, only dial up is available in my area which is why I pay $69.99 a month for my mobile broadband card. It's a little pricey but considering I take online courses I had to do something. I lost several papers due to being kicked off and just got fed up.
