IMO reef tanks require much much more artwork to get rock and coral placement correct as well as coloring. A reef tank to me is like a slow growing high end living painting where as a planted tank is like a nice yard that you sit and watch grow until it needs trimming. Not as much artistic skill needed in planted.
Still doesn't mean I wouldn't want a FW planted tank.. I just think reefs require much more of everything, equipment, money, work, than a FW planted tank to make it look nice. You can dump $10,000 in corals into a reef tank but if you don't understand the basics and have some parameter in the water out of balance you will lose them all very quicky.. you do the same in FW you may lose 1/2 of the plants at a loss of less than $100. There is just much more at stake with a reef tank and I think reef people take much more pride in their tanks (and deservedly so, it is a lot of work to make a reef tank look good). A nice looking reef tank requires not only a ton of money, but a lot of time (years) and work before they look like a nice full reef. You can get a nice full planted tank in just a few months.
