Come on guys, lets beat the planted tanks!

Not gonna garner alot of support I think... the best should win regardless of whether it's reef or plant. A nice planted tank is just as tough to achieve as a nice SW setup. Can't we all just get along?

No we cant. Everyone knows Saltwater A) Looks better B) Looks Better C)Is more of a challenge. But only A and B are what matter.

Oooh, a pile of rocks and the gdp of a small country worth of livestock... Real skill there. Those are all nice tanks, but there's no art in reef tanks... Just scads of money.

I am guessing you have never kept a reef tank? To say there is no art or skill required for a reef tank is just ludicrous.

I have never kept a FW planted tank but I can easily see there is alot of artwork and skill required.

Seems like you're bashing reef just because it can take "scads" of money.

Most reefers prefer reefs because there are many more colors to choose from than green.

Well said:headbang2:

I'm not sure about the challenge part. I had more of a fit attempting to get the right color and array of plants in my FW planted than my previous reef. I've always had much, much better luck with marine animals.

IMO reef tanks require much much more artwork to get rock and coral placement correct as well as coloring. A reef tank to me is like a slow growing high end living painting where as a planted tank is like a nice yard that you sit and watch grow until it needs trimming. Not as much artistic skill needed in planted.

Still doesn't mean I wouldn't want a FW planted tank.. I just think reefs require much more of everything, equipment, money, work, than a FW planted tank to make it look nice. You can dump $10,000 in corals into a reef tank but if you don't understand the basics and have some parameter in the water out of balance you will lose them all very quicky.. you do the same in FW you may lose 1/2 of the plants at a loss of less than $100. There is just much more at stake with a reef tank and I think reef people take much more pride in their tanks (and deservedly so, it is a lot of work to make a reef tank look good). A nice looking reef tank requires not only a ton of money, but a lot of time (years) and work before they look like a nice full reef. You can get a nice full planted tank in just a few months.

Thanks Ace,

That's what I was thinking but you put it into much better words.

Also, what kind of pests and quarantine do the FW planted guys have to deal with compared to us reef freaks?
