Come on guys, lets beat the planted tanks!

I am guessing you have never kept a reef tank? To say there is no art or skill required for a reef tank is just ludicrous.

I have never kept a FW planted tank but I can easily see there is alot of artwork and skill required.

Seems like you're bashing reef just because it can take "scads" of money.

Most reefers prefer reefs because there are many more colors to choose from than green.

Ya no kidding. What a joke. I had a full planted tank that looked amazing. And Im not just saying that. All my coworkers loved it when it was at my work. But it didnt take a whole lot of art or skill. Basically planted them and did one nice aquascape and let it grow.

I spent alot of money on CO2. So dont say it isnt expensive. If you were to take a world wide poll I guarantee SW would come back hands down as the best type of tank.

Water boatmen, hydra, dragonfly nymphs, damselfly nymphs, leeches, springtails, pond snails, MTS and ramshorns. Does that help?:grinyes:

IMO reef tanks require much much more artwork to get rock and coral placement correct as well as coloring. A reef tank to me is like a slow growing high end living painting where as a planted tank is like a nice yard that you sit and watch grow until it needs trimming. Not as much artistic skill needed in planted.

Still doesn't mean I wouldn't want a FW planted tank.. I just think reefs require much more of everything, equipment, money, work, than a FW planted tank to make it look nice. You can dump $10,000 in corals into a reef tank but if you don't understand the basics and have some parameter in the water out of balance you will lose them all very quicky.. you do the same in FW you may lose 1/2 of the plants at a loss of less than $100. There is just much more at stake with a reef tank and I think reef people take much more pride in their tanks (and deservedly so, it is a lot of work to make a reef tank look good). A nice looking reef tank requires not only a ton of money, but a lot of time (years) and work before they look like a nice full reef. You can get a nice full planted tank in just a few months.

Very well said. It took maybe 2 months of CO2 for my planted tank to be completely full. I got so bored when there wasnt really anything else I could do. It was like a lawn that you hated because you had to trim it. With SW there is ALWAYS something you can do. I thought my nano was complete but boy was I wrong. There is fragging to be done and pods to be harvested. Coraline algae to be scraped and Zoos to be uprighted(dang clown fish!). It never stops. And its always relaxing even though its alot of hard work.

This is only an inference and an opinion at that. Have you conducted a worldwide survey to be able to guarantee which side wins? It's just a win-win situation. Like I said earlier, it is up to personal taste. This is becoming a battle of planted tank enthusiasts and reef enthusiasts and more so, a battle of biased opinions.

I am by no means biased. I kept FW and planted tanks for years. But when one moves to a SW there is nothing better. The challenge is there and the beauty is there. How many movies are there about FW fish? But look at the success of Finding Nemo. EVERYONE that sees a clown fish goes "Oh its Nemo!" and they all know its a SW fish. Nobody that sees a planted tanks goes "Oh its a planted tank." If you had a nice reef and a nice planted tank side by side and let 10 people into a room I guarantee 7 out of 10 are gonna look at the reef first. Its just much more colorful and much more fascinating.

I respect both. Only reason I joined in was because of the joker that said reefs were just a ton of money with no artwork or skill.

As do I. After doing both planted and reefs I know that a reef took much more work.

Nice.. yay for Pixar! Nice basis for an argument dude... an animated movie. No matter what the tank, they should be judged on their quality, not bias. Get over it and please stop posting so negatively.

thats the bottom line. i dont vote for a planted tank just because its a planted tank and the same should go for any time you vote. vote for what you think is the best be it plants be it reef be plastic fish in tank.

Personally, I absolutely love both and have them at the same time. Comparing them is like comparing apples with oranges. Amano's with Cousteau's photography. You can't really compare them, but they both can be breathtaking. I just like the best of both worlds, that's all.
