if i am gone for a week and their lights are off? i know my fish will be okay. i don't have any money at all right now or i'd get a timer. the only alternative would be to leave the lights on but i don't really want to deal with a giant algea outbreak

will they get any ambient lighting from a window or anything?

Which would be more expensive: replacing the plants, or finding a couple BN pleco's to clean up the algae (if there's a major outbreak) when you get back?

What plants?

i'm not too good with names but
java moss
lace java fern
anubias nana
moneywort
one that looks like moneywort but it has long thin leaves rather than round
amazon sword
some different kinds of crypts
water sprite
aponogoten crispus
i think that's all

will they get any ambient lighting from a window or anything?

well there are lots of windows in the room so they won't be in total darkness but my main tank doesn't get much direct sunlight. there is a sliver of sunlight that goes through the tank for a couple hours in the morning, and there is a window on the opposite side of the room but it won't be that bright cause it's far away

but what happens when all the algae is gone????? and what if her tank is stocked to the brim??????

i would go and buy a timer.....it is one of those things that you dont want, but after you get it you will wonder how you could live with out it!!!
