Probably, considering today's educational standards, but that is not what this thread is about.

What is your vote for the smartest type of aquarium fish?

My vote has to be for the Blue Ram (apistogramma ramirezi). These fish definitely know whats going on inside and outside their tanks. Believe me, they know the difference between the food canister and the collection net.

Bonus points for posting pics!!!

Can't wait to see what everyone thinks and what stories you have to share about your smart fish!

I love this pic.

Well! One of my danios (the orange GloFish) has gotten into the filter chamber of my Biocube 3 times now, despite all the barriers I erected. The last time he got thru a hole the size of his body and then leaped over. I just put up a new barrier, but I feel like I'm being outsmarted by a tiny fish! They're all pretty smart, they come to the top every time I open the hood, and figured that out by the second day.

My peacocks gudgeons are like dogs. As soon as I walk into the room, they come to the front and watch me. As soon as I open the lid on the tank, they come to the top for their food, and eat it directly out of the baster (while all other fish are afraid of the baster).

And they run like hell from the net. How they know the difference between the baster and the net is impressive to me. They are both large foreign objects in their habitat.

After spawning when I remove the eggs to the fry tank, the male will stay around the area where he was guarding the eggs before the hand of god came and removed them. After a day, he'll continue as normal and swim around happily and begin to court the female again.

I freakin' love these fish. :)

Here is a pic of my male:

Sounds like you have a little Houdini on your hands!

Sounds like a cool fish!!! I may have to try my hand at these someday soon!

I can't argue on the merit of "smarts" for the various African Cichlids I keep, but they sure are easily "conditioned." Anyone who has kept them knows how they are just aquatic pavlov's dogs... flocking to the front of the tank, following you from one end to the other, once they figure out you're the food guy.

I've never kept South American Cichlids before, but have read that Oscars are unbelievably bright. Maybe someone can shed more light on them.

My golden barb. He has on many occasions saved my corys from falling objects. He also guards their food when the danios come to get it.

Another would be one of my corys, a peppered one, because e watches the food drop, then pounces on it and hides it under the roots of an amazon sword.

Queen Trigger Fish.
One at my LFS (she is a permanent resident) is very, very smart. She has learned tricks, and interacts with every customer. She is by the door, and I watched her for a while, every time the bell would sound when a customer opened the door, she'd dart over to greet them.
If you lead your head she'll roll over, too.
I love her to death, she's worth the 45 minute drive herself.

These sound like great fish! Thanks for sharing! :)
