Just got an Aquaclear filter and I hate it!

a noisy aqua clear??? i dont believe it lol.. ive used them for 10 years.. i still use a 10 year old one and it is quieter than any new filter I have tried.. you best check your prop and make sure you dont have a issue.. and make sure you didnt drop any filter carbs etc into the motor..

I have 6 AC's only one has an issue with lid rattle. You also need to ensure that it is mounted level and parallel to the glass.

All the intake tube extensions are the same for each model. Not like others that require a spacer or connector to add an extension on. When you go to get an extension for one, all you have to do is specify which model you have. No worries about whether top, middle or bottom.

That's too bad....my AC50 is so much quieter than my Whisper 30....

One thing you can do with any noisy magnet impeller driven HOB-
Pull out the magnet impeller- inspect for any "flash" or "burrs" on the plastic part. (little pieces of extra plastic left from the molding process)
Trim off the flash. I use a box cutter blade or Xacto knife.
It could be the tiniest bit of plastic but it is enough to throw off the balance of the thing and make it rattle.
I fixed a couple of mine by doing this.

Pull out the magnet impeller- inspect for any "flash" or "burrs" on the plastic part.

Excellent suggestion! I'll be sure to examine the blades on the impeller the next time I change my filter. :thm:

Do you still have the Lvl adjusting thing on the motor?

I just put an AC 20 on my 20g last night. One of the first things I done was, break this off.
If you haven't cut it, to just the right length. It could be causing a weird load on the motor, if it and the adjustable on on the main body arn't perfect.

I just set the adjustable one on the main body to the second step. Thats usually worked for me. (It did again)
Put the sponge in.
The carbon bag.
Put it on the tank, with the intake in the UG tube. Which I cut to fit about a 1/4" below the AC body.
Filled the AC and turnt it on. Nice and quiet, as soon as the air cleared out. Going to have to do a DIY for the water comming out. To get rid of the water fall bubble/gurgle noise. It seems like the smaller the filter the more annoying the out flow is.

Then...
Woke up this morning.
And motor wasn't running. And warm.
Took it off. Plugged it back in. Smacked it. And good to go again.
Not sure what happened. But one possibility, would be. An air bubble came up through the UG and it got air locked(something like that). The got hot and quit?

I've had probably every size they make and very few problems.

I grew up outside of KC, Mo. And we had a front room. Ate breakfast, lunch and supper. I heard warshing quite a bit, but I pretty much stuck with wash'n.

It's really too bad about AC's in the fact that they work very well for what they are, but yes, they tend to rattle, buzz, grind and hum. There really is nothing you can do about it. Some are very quiet, some are noisy, some start as quiet and get noisy - and all are affected by the lid.

I attribute it to the stiff, brittle plastic and the lack of any acoustic insulation. Hagen would really do the world a favor if they spent just a little money researching how to quiet these machines. Start by using a softer, more vibration absorbing plastic. And find a way to make the lid part of reducing rather than adding to the noise!

The best HOB filter I ever had as far as being quiet was my older Penguin. (125 - first generation biowheel.) With the biowheel on it made just a sparse and occasional water lap noise. With it removed I didn't hear a peep.

I have a AQ75 and 500. Noise is often an issue. But I've found that it you unplug it and plug it back in a couple times, it will suddenly go silent sooner or later. If not, take the propellor out, clean it and put it back in. Sometimes they're NOISE, but with a little fiddling I can usually get them completely silent. And yes, much quieter than my whispers were.
