Are household roaches suitable for feeding? I have a school of 9 tiger barbs and a school of 5 adult black skirt tetras and they eat live crickets and seem to love them.

Iv hear of feeding roaches but didnt know if it was a suitable source of food for my tiger barbs..

Any ideas? suggestions? tips?

thanks :)

Yes, I am aware of that.. I remember reading a post on here regarding feeding roaches to fish but I cant seem to find it.

I just dont want to kill them, or risk it.

I was just curious about it and was wondering who all does it.

My father used to do that with his own arowanas but due to safety reasons, I have decided to refrain from using cockroaches. I would prefer safer means than to risk losing all my fish from inadvertent poisoning. We use insecticides from time to time so I can easily gather to myself anything in the house is not safe for use.

Yeah.. I get what your saying as well.

I buy about $0.50 worth of live crickets from Petsmart every now and then and my tiger barbs love the hunt of live food :)

I posted a thread about it a while ago. We have a colony at the store (ew) and due to the possibility of losing our stock, we don't ever use poison. So whenever we trap a bug (and trust me, we trap some NASTY ones) we toss them in for the oscar or the sevs. They DESTROY roaches.
So yes, they are a feasible food source, but you must make sure the roaches themselves haven't been poisoned. Hard to do.

We just had a live food speaker at my last aquarium club meeting.

He had brought in roaches he uses as food. I don't remeber what kind they were. They were not the common german cockroaches.

I would imagine the risk of poisoning your fish would be too great with wild roaches.

I agree, unless you are isolated from other "neighbors" that use poison for bugs, and do not use poison of your own, then it is OK---but is it worth it.

PS--But to answer your question---Roaches would be great food for fish.

Everyone I know that feeds roaches regularly breeds them specifically for that purpose. they are quieter and less smelly than crickets, and not cannibalistic. There are also several species that are tropical and will not survive in normal basement temperatures (60-65ish), so you don't have to worry about them escaping and taking over your house. I have a friend that breeds dubia, lobster and banana roaches for various food sources.
