What does it take to survive

^ including each other.... I have a large mouth in my 300g pond, and he eats birds if they land there, or on a branch over it...

I would suggest that you get panfish, or some other Perch speicies, that don't end up as big as a bass if all you have is a 55g

Sunfish would be a much better choice than Bass.

Thanks for the responses. I have to have Bass. I really like them and their personalities.

I Guess I will now have to search craigslist for a bigger tank.

I know Bass eat anything they can get their mouth around. Heck i have caught bass that my lure was as big if not bigger than they were.

Last- and I'm sure its a dumb question but i do have to get rid of the algae/sucker fish or he'll be lunch correct?

Probably, how big is it and what species is it? Maybe post a pic? Also, if you're not going to heat the tank your tropical algae eater/sucker fish might not fare so well.

I'd suggest having a look over on this forum: http://forum.nanfa.org/

If it moves and is smaller in 8 inches in diameter, it will become food.

Its not like your dropping big cash on them, keep them till there too big and ask around for a pond to put them in later. If not, chop there heads off and toss in the trash ,or burry them..

Oh yeah, I'd second sunfish over bass. For bass you'll need a very large tank, and lots of filtration. If you're up for that, awesome. Just be aware you're probably looking at more equipment, more expense, and more work.

There's really a huge diversity of sunfish species, some of which look like and behave like smallmouth / largemouth bass with the advantage of being smaller. Take a look at green sunfish, rock bass, or warmouth. From what I've heard green sunfish are especially aggressive. However, a lot of sunfish species aren't really suitable for a 55g tank either.

Check out the NANFA forum, research everything you can, evaluate what kind of expense you want to put into this, good luck, and enjoy!

Responsible fish keeping at it's finest...:wall:

As a fisherman, you should know how big bass can get, with your feedings, they'll likely get trophy size in no time... A 55 gallon tank will never be able to hold two of them, not even one. You'd need a 75 for one, and I'd say a 120 for two.

I STRONGLY recommend getting a larger tank, the fish will look way better.

It's kind of like keeping a show-horse in a closet for its whole life, it's a show-horse, but it won't look like one. It'll be a disfigured pony with back problems and more prone to disease.

The fish will be more active, look better, and live longer if you have a big tank.
