If you're reading AC right now and it's thundering... back away from the computer.

From my dad:

(edited name to something else)

Last night I was sitting at my computer. Jane said she could hear thunder in the distance. Next, a tremendous bang. My hand blasted off the mouse. A hot tingling burn in my head and arm. Jane saw an arc across the room to the wall where I was sitting. Breakers throughout the house were tripped. The mouse I was holding, printer and modem no longer works. The computer and I survived. Home phone is kaput.

lol, sorry to hear it but it is kinda funny, good thing he is ok!

Yeah, he's fine and it is amusing... (because he's OK)

Just a caution for those who use electronic devices in a thunderstorm.

...and get that house grounded properly!

My keyboard and mouse are wireless. Does this still apply to me?

Probably not... although I had my house struck by lightning once and it took out both my PCs- my network hub... two televisions, a light switch, tripped the ground fault on the freezer (full of meat and we didn't realise the ground fault had switched on the freezer until it reeked)...

... I always unplug anything valuable during a thunder storm now anyway. Not from safety- although that's a concern after what happened to my dad... but out of the fact that we had a lot of damage when we got hit. Although insurance payed for it after the deductible.

(oh and the TVs and PCs WERE both on appropriate surge protectors and still got zapped so don't think that will save you)

Amazingly all the small electronic items and whatnots around the house wern't effected... just the expensive ones.

That is actually a very smart thing to do...unplug all your valuable electronics. We do the same thing at our house and we also have surge protectors that won't help if you get a direct hit. Better safe than sorry...
